Definitely worth purchasing., January 1, 2009
This review is from: The Raw Secrets: the Raw Food Diet in the Real World, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
To me, this book is a continuation on themes raised by John Robbins, who Pautenade credits with his transition to veganism.
So first, to fully understand why raw veganism is more healthful than a raw diet that includes meat I would read the following books which are also mentioned in Raw Secrets:
The Food Revolution by John Robbins
Eat to Live by Dr Joel Fuhrman
The China Study By Colin Campbell pHD.
The Raw Secrets is a very good supplement to my ultimate favorite book, Eat To Live, where Dr Fuhrman advocates a diet comprised of half raw, half cooked leafy/green vegetables, fruits, nuts and beans.
However, whilst Eat To Live changed my life and made me realize that food was to blame for my health problems, he does not emphasize enough the role of fat in candida overgrowth, fatigue and malabsorbtion of food.
For the record Fuhrman does mention that nuts and avocados should only be eaten in small quantities but as he didn't explain why I decided that because I work out every day I could gorge myself on them.
Pautenade's book is written in an inviting style that chronicles his own personal development and experiences with raw foods, being absolutely honest when he found something that wasn't working and speaking from the heart when he convinces us how much his energy and health improved when he realized that naturally available raw foods were right for him.
I really liked the fact that Patenade admitted eating steamed veggies on occasion and urges readers not to get obsessed with their diet. I feel like too many people take raw veganism too far and forget that there are many long lived tribes who eat steamed root vegetables and quinoa.
Personally I plan on going fully raw for a month to detox and then bring a few starchy veggies back in. The author is also spot on about juicing - as long as juices are mostly vegetable and you add the fiber back in I think it's a great way to add minerals to your diet. Celery and cucumber are great to juice and annoying to eat.
Whilst I see nothing dangerous about steamed vegetables, it makes perfect sense that the molecular structure and nutrient content would be compromised, so it's just better to eat raw when possible. I think of it as living foods giving us life. =)
My personal experiences with such diets first came out of motivation to help animals, when I started following Eat To Live.
I have always had bad health, frequent infections and tiredness, migranes, joint pain and I'm only 25.
When I ditched meat/dairy my chronic headaches, hypoglycemia and constant sickness faded away and I lost 15 pounds of annoying fat that wouldn't shift despite 2 hour work outs. My muscle growth improved despite giving up meat which really surprised me.
I tried my best to stick with it, but working in a restaurant didn't make it easy. However, when I realized how much better I felt when I didn't eat grains or even fasted for 24 hours I realized I was cheating myself out of good health for the sake of a food addiction.
In preparation for what I knew was going to be a harsh diet in the New Year I decided to take a 'cheat week' on my diet over the holidays which I am ending tomorrow. In just a few days I have put on about 5 pounds, feel really fat and my energy levels have been rock bottom - the first few days I didn't even want to get out of bed and have been suffering from a general lack of motivation where everything seems like too much effort. Testing myself in such a way just showed me how much diet really does affect not only our weight, but also mental state and disease.
I am proof that these diets work, and I look forward to starting a new diet based on the Raw Secrets and am confident I can beat my chronic fatigue for good. I am just so happy I found his book as now I know that fats create fatigue by blocking absorption of sugars.
I took one star off due to the constant referencing to his newsletters and website, which is information that should have been included in such an expensive book.
If you are reading this review and are overweight, tired, suffering from joint pain, migranes or any kind of malaise it really doesn't need to be that way. No food is worth risking your health for. Clearly most vegans once loved meat and cheese as much as you do but the funny thing is that after a few months, you don't even want those things. Just try it and see what happens.

The best book I have read on the raw food diet., January 17, 2008
This review is from: The Raw Secrets: the Raw Food Diet in the Real World, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
This is the best book I have ever read on the raw food diet and I have read several. Frederic Patenaude writes in a clear down to earth enjoyable style that is easy to understand. He does not come off as overbearing or pushy. The book takes you through everything necessary to get you started on the raw food diet including, what foods humans should eat and why. He discusses fats, proteins, and carbohydrates the good and the bad about each. To make sure you are truly healthy there is info on sleep and exercise also. There are suggestions on how to setup a raw food recipe to get you started, how to plan them and how to find out how many calories you are eating and much, much more. If you have difficulties with cravings, which most of us do, it's discussed as well. Once again this is the best raw food book I have read. If you are thinking about the raw food diet you can not go wrong by reading this book.

It is definitely my first and foremost recommendation, March 9, 2008
This review is from: The Raw Secrets: the Raw Food Diet in the Real World, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
I receive Frederic's newsletters and have ordered some of his e-books(which I partially read, mostly skimmed) but it wasn't until I ordered the hard copies of the books (which I prefer to hold a 'real' book!) that I couldn't put it down and read cover to cover. I was amazed! I wished I had found this book first!
I love his down to earth style that makes you feel like you are having great discussion with a friend. And yet, I'm amazed and thrilled to see how he took so much information and very easily simplified it into such understandable, pleasurable reading. It's for this reason that this book will be the book I will loan or buy as gifts because it is not overwhelming, and it is not confusing and makes good reading for all people.
It's only a matter of time that the word will be out, and this book, along with some others of his will have hundreds of reviews and be bestsellers.
Thanks Frederic for making it so much easier to explain, to share, to do what things I do.
