5.0 out of 5 stars It's raw and sweet April 16, 2014

A very easy read. The topics are raw but very necessary, because she talks about the stuff that becomes silenced in our souls early on in life as young girls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Powerful, Creative Truth At Its Best!!! December 9, 2012

As a poet, published author myself, I always love and enjoy when I have an opportunity to get inside the mind, heart and soul of my fellow poets. And although I respect all creative efforts. Sometimes I come across some creative works that just don't move me. That is certainly not the case with Raw Sugar. I was drawn in from the first line and was captivated until the very end. Red Summer is not only a gorgeous woman. She's a gorgeous and outstanding poet as well. Raw Sugar will definitely be one of my go to sources for inspiration when writer's block once again stalks me. Raw Sugar is a must read, buy it!!!

Atlanta poet Red Summer is a force to be reckoned with.

Powerful in person as well as in print, Red Summer is sweet, stunningly stellar, and raw...in truth telling. In her unforgettable new poetry collection, RAW SUGAR, she captures what it means to be human and, most importantly, female in America and around the globe. Her work reminds us to be the very best we can be in the face of poor politics, bad society and parties gone astray. She heralds fearlessness. She shines a light on situations that others sweep under the carpet. She is an undeniable Presence on the world's poetic stage, and she will not suffer anyone to deny herself to make someone else look large, for by her life, she leads the way.

I received my copy of RAW SUGAR in August. I'd consumed it by September. Not because it was difficult to read or finish, but because I could not swallow it. It required sipping. Not to miss a single word hastily imbibed. Red Summer is the sort of poet one cherishes.

The book is shimmering art. Don't miss it. Get your copy tonight and stand in the flow of blessings.

Loving all things red....

5.0 out of 5 stars Red Summer Bares It For All to Feel November 8, 2012
By Anisa
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"i haven't been writing/ not for a while/ even though the world has tried it's damnedest to/ get my/ attention/ to drum up something worthy of a mention/ in my notebook," writes Red Summer in her book, Raw Sugar. Her poems are simply written yet infused with the brilliance of life's experience. Raw Sugar is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, feelings, thoughts and experiences. Wherever Red Summer wants to take you, you're sure to follow. She questions the first four years of Barack Obama's presidency while criticizing the former California governor stance on marriage equality. Her words can heal as well as assassinate.

She writes, "i want to remember my pain/ but i don't want to live with it/ everyday" in the `for the rainy day..." We've all been through pain, physical/emotional. Red Summer articulates very poignantly that it is acceptable to remember that pain as a reminder but don't dwell on it to hinder you from your greatness. Maybe I embellished a little bit, or maybe her words resonated with me and my experiences.

In Raw Sugar Red Summer has shown her pain, triumphs and intelligence. Red Summer mixes shorter and longer poems and sprinkle in a few prose pieces, but she gains momentum and power in her longer pieces. Most of all Red Summer articulates humanity as her life unfolded. As she continues on her journey of discovery, love and life, I cannot wait to continue to read her poetry and prose as she does it.

Raw Sugar is as sweet as it's name. A page turner, each piece left me wanting more. If you don't have this book, it's one that should be added to your collection.
