4.0 out of 5 stars memories of How the West was Won, November 28, 2004
I had an early vinyl copy of this, which I loved, long since lost and worn out, and I'm absolutly delighted that it's available on CD. Always loved Sheb Wooley's voice for this sort of music. Makes one think of the (mythical) West and provokes nostalgia for a lost (and in fact brutally hard)life led by some people in the not too distant past, for whom some of these sorts of songs were probably their only consolation while driving cattle. Only sorry that, in the UK, I probably can't get a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars About time!, July 31, 2000
I have been waiting for YEARS for Rawhide to be re-released onto CD (I've worn out the record)! This CD also includes the album, "How the West was Won" (which according to the liner notes didn't do very well, which makes me kind of wonder why they included that particular album on this cd...)Every song on Rawhide is my favorite song - although I didn't think too much of "How the West was Won," there were a couple of outstanding songs that made it a real treat (i.e. Papa's Fiddle).

The inclusion of the liner notes adds so much more to the experience - it's a biography of Sheb Wooley as well as notes on his songs.

For anyone who remembers the original album or for anyone who simply loves western ballads, this CD is a One-Click-Buy-Right-Now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Different strokes. . . ., November 14, 2000

With all due respect to my fellow reviewer, the How the West Was Won segment of this release is uniformly excellent! I would go so far as to say I prefer it to the Rawhide side, but it's a tough call. Bottom line? More is better than less, so let's just be glad Bear Family put both on here! Chances are good HtWWW would have missed the CD revolution otherwise.

Say, if you're reading this and decide to put this CD in your shopping basket, consider Eddy Arnold's Cattle Call/Thereby Hangs a Tale--also from Bear Family and available from Amazon. It's got some great songs on it, and makes an interesting companion to Sheb's albums.
