Book Description

January 1, 2010
Ray Johnson (1927-1995) had an ambivalent relationship with the art world. From famous precursor to impenetrable marginal figure, from critic to artist who yearned for fame at all costs, Johnson intuited his own vital art somewhere between collage and the communicative potential of an immense postal network. Like the MACBA's current monographic exhibition - the first in Spain dedicated to his work - this book mostly focuses on the New York collages from Ray Johnson's first period and his Mail Art. Essays by Alex Sainsbury, the curator of the exhibition, and Ina Blom, as well as an introduction by Chus Martinez, enrich a lavishly illustrated book.

This review is from: Ray Johnson: Please Add to & Return (Paperback)
I've long been disappointed that the few books on Ray Johnson are out of print, so this slim volume, commemorating the 2009 exhibition of his work at Raven Row (UK)and in Barcelona, will have to do for now. The book focuses on his early collages and mail-art. In the product description, the publishers describe this book as "lavishly illustrated." Not really accurate. The book measures about 8 x 10 inches and, while the quality of the color and reproduction is good, the size of the images leaves one wanting more. Additionally, the book is pretty text heavy (I think it's safe to say there is a 2:1 text-photo ratio) and most of that text is in Spanish. Further, the essays in the back of the book -- which are in English -- illuminate and help frame Johnson's work and life, but are printed on colored pages -- black type on an indigo page, for example -- making it challenging to read. No matter. On the whole, I'm glad to have found this.
