My favroite side-scrolling platformer!, April 7, 2003
This review is from: Rayman (Video Game)
During the golden age of the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis, side-scrollers were a dime a dozen. Unforetunately, it took good artists and programmers to bring out the full potential of a 16-bit system. Still, over the years we got many classics. Sonic, Mario, Donkey Kong, and let's not forget all the Disney classics (Aladdin, Lion King). When the world made the transition to 32-bit and 64-bit sytems (Saturn, Playstation, N64), there were a few good side-scrollers that came out. But the public started to demand more and more 3d games, the publishers delivered. Now, the side-scrollers are all but extinct. But the legend still lives on...
There have been many side-scrolling platforms thoughout the ages, but the original Rayman is the best in my opinion. And the Saturn version is the best version of this game. Every little bit of this awesome games simply reeks of artistic genius. The music is awesome. The background artwork (with its outstadning use of color and multiple layers) is astounding. The controls are tight, and the gameplay is supreme. And since you gain new powers as you go along (and gain access to previously unreachable parts of past levels), and there are a LOT of electoons to find, this game will have you playing for quite a while.
But more than just being a great game, this game is tons of fun. Rayman himself is full of personality, and there is tons of variety in the gameplay. In this game, you'll fly through spiked levels, slide through snow covered levels, climb like crazy through rising water levels, and even play through levels while being chased by your anti-self and with reversed controls. And if you're anything like me, you'll love every minute of it.

A nice platformer for your saturn collection, October 27, 2010

Rayman is a limbless hero who goes around different areas freeing electoons from their cages. At the same time he fights hordes of enemies who try to stop him from proceeding any further. You'll gain different abilities along the way which makes the game more exciting.
The graphics are lush and vibrant, the music is great, and the gameplay is awesome although some might find it a bit difficult, especially when you get further into game. All in all this is a great game to put in any ones library. I also have the psx version, and I think the Saturn version is better than it.

OH so much fun back in the day and for me it still is..., October 22, 2011

Up until recently I always thought this started as a Saturn game, it actually started as an Atari Jaguar game with your more standard cartridge based midi music and fx. It also had a bonus breakout style mini-game that isn't included here. What the Saturn (and many other versions) had going for it was the amazing soundtrack which today is probably not quite as amzing. Back when this game was released, CD was still a new concept in gaming and CD quality sounds blew everyone away who were used to the old cartridge midi sounds. The graphics were beautiful and to this day, I still think they look excellent. Some games don't age well but for me, this was a classic and still is. Rayman 1 sort of brought a closing chapter to original 2D side-scrolling platformer games (recently there has been a revival). While Rayman 2, its sequel was another excellent game that wrote a beginning chapter for 3D platformer games which were quickly taking over the 2D games that many were used to. With the exception of some rabbid rabbits, Rayman hasn't aged gracefully since, but these first two games are still excellent...any Retro fan or old school fan, must try it out. They'll have a blast.
