I bought 2 to replace older existing units based on the previous review he wanted to own them outright, but once they came in and I popped in my existing card, the unit complained about having the wrong card and wouldn't go any further without call calling Directv. A new card was provided but that gave a similar "phone home before proceeding" message. On the box it's written that this is a leased product, you have to return it if you terminate the lease, blah, blah. I tried refreshing the service several times but it looks like the software is locked down enough to prevent getting around calling Directv.
So really there's no point in buying this from anyone but Directv because you'll have to talk to them at some point and get hit with the $5/month charge.
Alt Electronics did do their part, it arrived quickly and well packed. Just would have been good know it was a leased unit BEFORE buying.I saved $4/unit by purchasing this from Alt instead of Directv but I'm just going to use my old units until they breakdown completely. I can find something else to do with that $140 per year in lease fees.

Directv will tell you that after you have ended your service with them, this item is THERE'S. You are not purchasing this item, you are purchasing a chance to lease this item. This is a way for Directv to take you money, do not purchase it. Also, if you end service within a year of activating, you will be charged a EARLY TERMINATION FEE.

Direct TV will let you "rent" or "lease" equipment, but it can cost you if if you don't return it when you stop the service, I purchased this so I own it and after recent floods in Nashville who wants to ship back stuff. Arrived days ahead of schedule, Thanks to great vendor.

Item as described....quick shipping. Reciever was easy to install and, once activated by our TV service, worked as expected.

D12 Worked just fine for me. I ordered 5 each. Only small (However easy to handle)
problem was, each had different software version. So, It might take 5 to 7 minutes of time to downlaod new software.

Im using this receiver in a spare room on an old TV. Easy to install. I have a great picture too.

I was just tired of getting sucked into a 2yr contract w/directv . I just wanted a cable box free and clear so I got one ,it even came with the remote . I did not know because it did not say a remote was coming with it so of course I bought a remote so now I have 2 but it was only 3.00 an something . great buy it was new and all i had to do is have a tech hook it to my sat-dish . it also would not activate in the room had to take it in the living room first and then move it . great great

Bought two of these so I don't have to pay DirectTV a fee if it's not hooked up like I have to with those I rent from them. Now when one of my tenants move out, I can have the box turned off and no monthly fee until the next person moves in and decides to have TV in their room.

I had directv installed in 1994 and I still had an old RCA receiver that was still working. I wanted to upgrade to a better receiver. I found this one on Amazon.New receivers at a very good price. This is the D12 directv receiver. This receiver can be upgraded by directv. If you have caller ID,then you can see who is calling you on the tv screen.IF you need to upgrade to a newer receiver,then I recommend this one. I orderd one and liked it so well that I ordered another one. Even though you order this receiver it is still leased by directv. You will have to commit to a 18 month service. The price for each additional receiver is $5.00. I plain to stay with directv so this is fine with me.
