Book Description

June 12, 1999
From car to train design to product packaging, Raymond Loewy has left an indelibly stamp on American culture. Over the 70 years of his career, Loewy, known for streamlined design, created mythical objects which came to be associated with the very image of America itself: The Coca-Cola bottle and truck, the Greyhound bus, the package of Lucky Strike cigarettes, the Studebaker automobile, and much more. This remarkable book recounts the hidden, captivating story of a key figure in the history of American design and includes period and current photos of his most notable designs.

This review is from: Raymond Loewy and Streamlined Design. Universe of Style (Hardcover)
Raymond Lowey was an amazing designer of historical proportions and this book comes across as a piece of snide work as if the purpose was to "take the Lowey reputation down a peg or two." While begrudingly giving Lowey his due it is done in such a way as to make the reader think less of Lowey and his achievements. The book is interesting only because of the viewpoint it takes, not necessarily because it can support that view, and for the visual plates.

The text begins on page 4; by 1/2 way through page 5 Lowey is under outright attack. The text only goes to page 17 so at a total of 12 pages it does not take long to read. Pages 18 through 72 are plates of Lowey designs and photographs, which are the best part of this book.

If you are interested in Lowey start with "Never Leave Well Enough Alone," or "Industrial Design" by Lowey himself. His work is amazing, startling, ground breaking, historic. This book is mildly petty, snide, and demeaning. I borrowed it from the library; I would not pay money for it.
