Razer BlackWidow Ultimate - Feel The Difference

The world's best-selling mechanical gaming keyboard just got better. Now built with the all-new Razer Mechanical Switches, the Razer BlackWidow will help you take your game to the next level with more speed and precision. By redefining the limits of performance, this elite gaming keyboard lets you leave the competition in the dust, even faster than before.

World's First Mechanical Switch Designed For Gaming

The Razer BlackWidow Ultimate features the all-new Razer Mechanical Switches that have been designed from the ground up with the aim of elevating the speed and responsiveness of the Razer BlackWidow gaming keyboard beyond the capabilities of current-gen mechanical switches. Tested and validated by the world’s top eSports athletes, we have identified the optimal actuation distance and reduced the tolerance for faster commands and greater precision when compared to standard mechanical switches. Made to also withstand rigorous physical demands, you can enjoy greater performance and durability, as you up your game with the world’s first gaming mechanical switches.

The Latest Benchmark In The World Of Competitive Gaming

The Razer Mechanical switch is designed to actuate at an optimal distance of 1.9mm into the keystroke, and reset itself to fire again at less than half the distance of standard mechanical switches. This allows for blazing fast actuations without having the need to bottom down into the keystroke each time.

I purchased this to replace my Das keyboard which I accidentally drowned in coffee. The product itself is pretty good. The feel is different from the Cherry MX Blue switches I was used to, but not in a bad way. The keyboard is beautiful and I was pleased with the purchase.

About a week in, one of the keys started having problems. I contacted Razer support and although I knew the key was defective, I went through the troubleshooting steps they suggested. After a series of emails, they were convinced that the keyboard was faulty and I received an RMA number. I was disappointed there was no cross shipping available so I had to send it back and wait for a replacement keyboard to be sent back to me.

I sent the keyboard back and almost a month later, I have heard nothing back. No emails verifying they received it the return or anything. I called them and asked for a status and got transfered a couple of times after which I was told that they did indeed receive the keyboard. The analyst could tell me no more and said someone would contact me with more information by the following day. A day later and still no call, no email, no keyboard.

In comparison, I called Das Keyboard since my last call to Razer and told them about the old destroyed keyboard. The keyboard was out of warranty and destroyed by my fault so the best they could do was offer me a discount on a new keyboard. The new Das keyboard is now en route and I am confident it will arrive before I hear anything from Razer.

So it boils down to this. I have worked in IT over 20 years. I understand products go bad or arrive DOA, understandable and realistic. But my one experience with Razer support has been one of the worst I have ever dealt with, especially for a premium product.

I've owned several different mechanical switch keyboards and have been experimenting with the various different switch types (Red, Green, Blue, etc.), and had settled on Brown (Blackwidow Tournament Stealth 2013 edition) with Blue O-Rings added as the best I was going to get (includes Razer Synapse macro engine, couldn't find any other mechanical kb's with built in macro engines). I was really pleased to see Razer adding a new Orange switch in their 2014 lineup (basically same as brown but better). The new Orange switches are immediately noticeably smooth, quieter, yet still provide a tactile bump. I like the direction Razer is going ... I hope they can continue to shorten the key strokes a bit (avoiding the need to add O-Rings perhaps) for those preferring that.

I only wish Razer would create a "Short" (more ergonomic) version (BlackWidow Tournament Stealth) form factor that has full backlighting like the more full sized keyboard models ..... since the BlackWidow Tournament Stealth and its sisters have only a few backlit keys, I instead installed LED strip lighting under my desk to light my keyboard ... pretty awesome for now but hopefully they will add more backlighting options in future.

I have had this keyboard for over 2 weeks now and have been using it mainly for MMO gaming.

Pros:
Mechanical keys provide good audio feedback on key presses.
Backlit keys.
Audio and USB passthrough.
Synapse software lets you customize key functions, including disabling keys.
The plastic has a nice feel to it.
Feels sturdy, difficult to move on accident.
Gaming mode can disable accidental key combinations that bring you out of game, and is easily activated.

Cons:
The Macro buttons add width to the keyboard.
The backlighting does not extend to secondary functions of keys.
Audio and USB passthroughs are on the right side of the keyboard.
May be too loud at times.
Personally, I'm not a fan of the font used for the keys.

Other:
The light indicators for the lock keys goes: Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock.
The lock key indicators and the Gaming Mode and Macro lights are blurry, underneath the normal case plastic.

Synapse is the software that is used to provide many of the unique features of this keyboard.

This is a very nice keyboard for gaming. The macros are easy to set up in Synapse, which allows the use of 10 different hotswappable profiles, using Fn and a number 1-0. One thing that has made my life slightly easier is the ability to easily disable Caps Lock from doing anything at all, though it can be remapped to something else you find useful.
Gaming Mode can be linked to a specific program using Synapse or manually toggled by pressing Fn+F10. Using synapse, you can have Gaming Mode disable key combinations that bring focus away from your game, such as Alt-Tab, Windows Key, or Alt-F4.
