3.0 out of 5 stars nice but some tiny annoyances
the actual mechanisms of this mouse are great but there are some ergonomic issues, at least for me.

1. it's somewhat small and i have small hands... i can't imagine what someone with bigger hands may feel.

2. it's slippery where your thumb grabs the mouse... the matte rubber surface is nice where your palm and clicking fingers are, but...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gaming Mouse = Good Mouse No Matter How You Slice It, July 12, 2008
By
This review is from: Razer Diamondback Frost Blue (Personal Computers)
After only a number of hours I can't imagine using any other normal mouse. While shopping for a 'gaming mouse' I was disheartened by the extremely overt negative reviews for every gaming mouse I could consider that was under $50.

Like most things involving those who are young and with little else to live for, these types of devices seem to install 'loyalty issues' between one brand or another. All of the negative things listed about this mouse I find to be wonderful features.

The material of the mouse is a wonderful soft rubber. The scroll wheel is large and has very pleasing control.

As to the side buttons which everyone seems to hate. They are designed so that the thumb can press either of them easily at will without actually moving positions. To press one you use the joint part of your thumb, and the other you use the flat part. The buttons on the other side, where you of course don't have a thumb, are exactly the same way. Because this is an ambi-dexterous mouse, if you are left handed you still get the wonderfully designed thumb button. As far as being able to easily press the two buttons on the side of the mouse where you don't have a thumb, this unreasonable, but extremely understandable. They are still easy to find because they have tiny plastic bubbles to identify them, but when using your pinky and ring finger you may have to take a split second to identify them from each other. You're only going to need two extra buttons for extreme combat 'oh my god' reaction situations, so the two buttons on the non-thumb side can be for other things which require less instant action, or simply not used at all.

The sensitivity changer-upper is controlled with one of the extra side buttons (you get to pick which one in the options, and that button can still have another function in addition to triggering the scroll wheel sensitivity change) + the scroll wheel. Whether you prefer this or a physical button on the mouse itself is simply personal preference. I love it being the scroll wheel, its simply easier for me to think about in my brain than having to find even MORE buttons on the mouse. Also the on-screen visualization is excellent, its visible but non-intrusive, and has shown up on top of every game I've tried it on.

The main two buttons are very long, which again I have grown to like and not despise. I can have my fingers arched up and pressing directly down or I can relax them flat, either way is comfortable and I like the option. My hand goes to its normal combat position in games but when I'm simply reading long bits of internet my hand can simply rest comfortably.

The software is excellent and there's no reason you wouldn't use it, but the mouse still 'works' when you first plug it in to Windows XP, so you don't have to worry about not having a functioning mouse if you need to reformat or some such.

I couldn't recommend this mouse more. I paid less for it than it costs here on Amazon, but now that I've tried it, if a meteor smashed my room (and Diamondback) to bits I'd pay even more than $40 for a replacement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhhhhhhh..., January 23, 2008

I got this mouse as a Christmas present from my fiance. I was building a system, and he thought I should have a nice mouse. He has one like it, but I didn't like the setting he had his at, but I love that you can really get this one right where you want it. It moves really well and I only have had one issue with it. When I first started gaming with it, the on the fly sensitivity reset itself when I really didn't want it to. I just went into the menu and turned that option off.

The other nifty thing I discovered is that if you have a Mac with a mighty mouse, the Razer Diamondback will work with it as well, even though it doesn't actually have mac support. My mighty mouse had gotten mighty slow, and this mouse blew my mind when I plugged it in. You can still set the sensitivity and the tracking and the click speed however you can't adjust the buttons like on a PC. I just got excited that the Diamondback worked at all on the Mac, so I wasn't that concerned with the buttons that I didn't use anyway not working. I would recommend this product to anyone that is looking for a new high performance mouse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty and Pleasing, February 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I debated spending money on a mouse just to play a couple of games.
This one just looked pretty. Then it arrived in the mail, quickly I may add.

Wow, After trying to figure out how to program it, it made Fallout 3 awesome. I then tried it in Farcry and left for dead. What a difference.
I'm still configuring it. The Advanced menu on this thing is awesome.

BTW I'm a grandmother so these things are a bit new to me with the configuration stuff, but I'm getting there.
It's built well, fits my hand perfectly and I don't get the handcramps or pain after repeated "shooting"!

Am very happy I bought this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice mouse!, October 21, 2008

This is the nicest mouse I've owned. It's great for gaming.

It's not gigantic so it fits my hand well. It's nice and light. The mouse is very responsive and you can adjust the sensitivity level. It's sensitive enough to register even very slight movements. It also has a lot of programmable buttons. The cord doesn't tend to tangle, and I prefer a corded mouse because they can't run out of batteries. The mouse is also very cool looking if you care about that.

I only have one complaint about this mouse. It has small slick tabs on the bottom of it to allow it to slide across tables easily. These tabs are held in place by some type of glue. For whatever reason the black glue melted and oozed out of the sides of these tabs, leaving little dots of black glue on my desk. I didn't notice until I saw the black dots on my desk and it took me a while to figure out that they were coming from the mouse. I was surprised to see this happening considering how nice this mouse is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, June 12, 2008
This review is from: Razer Diamondback Frost Blue (Personal Computers)
It's a good mouse with very tweakable features in Vista.
As noted elsewhere, the side lights aren't as bright as the 1st gen, but that scroll wheel led will keep you up at night.
The only problem with my first gen diamondback is the teflon wore down on the bottom. The 3rd gen has better software from Razer.

5.0 out of 5 stars BOOM! HEADSHOT!!!, March 11, 2008
This review is from: Razer Diamondback Frost Blue (Personal Computers)
Ok so maybe you need it, maybe you don't, but if I had to go without this mouse now...... BEAUTIFULL MOUSE! Perfect for gaming, no drawbacks whatsoever. even if you don't like ultra responsiveness the software gives you plenty of control over response to adjust it just the way you like. If you are anything like me this thing will become a part of your own body and you will feel naked without it.

This is truly an FPS gamers dream! You'll hurt yourself trying to get this mouse to skip or spin out on you. The other reviewer probably needs to check his system, because this mouse is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great For Gaming, September 1, 2009
This review is from: Razer Diamondback Frost Blue (Personal Computers)
I'm so glad I bought this mouse. I was recently using a normal logitech laser mouse and I decided to take my gaming to the next level by getting a new mouse. I was mainly interested in two mice - the razer diamondback 3g and the logitech g5. As I browsed the razer website (www.razerzone.com) I realized that this company is primarily focused on gaming. The website has very useful information such as what type of grip style you have, what type of mouse is best for you, and it also has a huge list of definitions/descriptions of mice terms. Many people said that logitech was better than razer because of logitech's reliability but I disagree. This mouse feels much more comfortable compared to the logitech g5. It has 7 different buttons that allow customization, it has glowing blue lights, and it uses an infra-red sensor. On my old logitech mouse, sometimes my mouse would go crazy on me and my pointer would go all over the place. I would have to lift the mouse up and clean the bottom of the laser. I've had no problems like this with my razer diamondback. At first, it takes about a week or 2 of getting use to the shape of the mouse. Once i was comfortable, I was able to game with out any problems. It comes with the "on the fly" sensitivity adjustment which is great! I prefer gaming with a low sensitivity and browsing the web/desktop with a higher sensitivity - the "on the fly" sensitivity adjustment allows me to change my mouse sensitivity just by holding down one of the customizable buttons and scrolling up or down. Overall, its a perfect mouse for the average computer user/gamer. Be sure to check out razer's other products such as headphones, mouse pads, other mice, etc.
