I've had a Nostromo for years when it was still being manufactured by Belkin. They sold it Razer a while back and stopped driver support for the N52 which became a issue for me under Win7, so I figured since I liked the Death Adder mouse and Tarantula keyboard so much, surely their take on the Nostromo would be golden. It is...mostly, but they did fall short of a perfect redraft of the N52.

First, the software that comes bundled with the Razer Nostromo is very good, very solid and stable, and IMO better than what Belkin had going with their profiler. The Nostromo's profiler software under Belkin was good and easy to use, very intuitive on most levels as far as programming macros and keystrokes were concerned, and allowed you to set up 3 keymaps with page flipping fairly easily. The Razer version has the same ease of use, but is smoother and cleaner with its layout, it enables far smoother profile changes even within a game to other game set ups, something the Belkin version couldn't, and has 8 keymap options compared to Belkin's 3.

However, when I first got it, I was very annoyed with the device, because the thumb directional pad had this knob sticking up from the center that significantly interfered with my use of it as a directional movement button. It was intended to be a thumb joystick, but its responsiveness was abysmal, enough so that I regretted buying Razer's Nostromo and seriously considered taking it back. Then I discovered after a few days after seriously considering taking a Dremel to it, that it was removable and the thumb button's slightly dipped design was much more natural. It is however, not as good as Belkin's original, and for the same reason that the other thumb button at the base isn't as good as the original, they're both too tall and have as a result, too much depth of depression requirement. The amount of effort required to engage these buttons is thus unnatural and interefers with response time and often you think you're engaging it with enough pressure and you're not.

In contrast, the keys on the keypad are excellent, the texture of the buttons, the lighting, and the amount of distance that your finger has to depress them is all spot on and natural in the amount of effort and response, which is why it gets so annoying when you use the directional pad and thumb button, the depth and pressure required on both is very unnatural in comparison to the rest of the keypad. Were it not for the design of the two thumb buttons, this would get 5 stars from me. Considering how much effort Razer puts into their products otherwise, I have to admit I'm very taken aback at the change in the design they pursued for their version of this keypad, Belkin's was perfect and all 3 variations that I possessed up till having to retire my N52, the thumb buttons required but light pressure and very little depth to engage, it was natural and I never missed a keystroke with them. Using Razer's nostromo, I frequently have to pay far more attention to the device and making sure the directional or the bottom bar engage, and it has cost me more than a few matches as a result. Considering Razer bills itself as "By Gamers, for Gamers", I have to wonder what got into them when they picked up the rights for the Nostromo and then dropped the ball like that.

Wondering if it was just me, I had given my old one to a friend who still runs a XP operating system, under which the drivers and the profiler work without any issue, and he can't believe how much its changed his gaming experience, both from a enjoyment perspective and a effective improvement in his performance. I asked him to play his WoW and DCUO character with my rig, which his is very similar to, Nostromo on the left, keyboard center, mouse right, for most games, you barely touch the keyboard with this setup once you got your nostromo's profile and macros set up the way you want. He immediately commented on the thumb buttons, saying they felt unnatural and required more effort than the Belkin's, and I hadn't said a word to him about my annoyance with those two features. He played for a while a couple of pvp matches in both games, and in every match, he gripped about the movement pad and the base thumb switch taking way too much effort to engage, as he said it "I have to mash the button instead of tap it, what the hell were they thinking?"

Update 11-26-2012

I still possess the unit I purchased in Feb of 2011, my issues with its thumb and movement pad faded after a while. Whether it was a case of 'breaking it in' or if I was unlearning expected habits of the Belkin model I can't say. What I can say is ever since I've gotten this, I play every game using it and should any mishap befall it I would replace it with zero hesitation. Even the friend I mentioned above has converted to the Razer model and has in similar vein, gotten used to it and refuses to game without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only Game controller you will ever need to own May 12, 2011
By Maarc
I have owned every version of the Nostromo n52 since the first model, and I realize that many reading this review must be thinking that I'm giving an unfair and bias support to the Razer Nostromo n52 because I have not experience with any of the other gamepad controllers out there. You would be wrong, I have own, played, and worked with the Logitech G13 Programmable Gameboard with LCD Display and the Fang Gamepad and the Saitek PC Gamer's Keyboard and even the DX1 Input System and the The PEREGRINE Wearable Interface.

All of these products do what they promise, more or less, why do I recommend the Razer Nostromo n52 over all of them?
Let me break it down in a side-by-side comparison: Razer Nostromo Gaming Keypad vs.

- Saitek PC Gamer's Keyboard
This might be best described as "The Accountant comes to Gaming" set-up. The keyboard is great, I've owned several Saitek keyboards, but focusing just on the side gamepad, for the moment, this is really not much more than a detached number pad - like accounts use. Its fine for what it does, and you can program the keys and all, but any gamer interested in their game and interested in improving their game with a gamepad will be disappointed with Saitek gamepad. It's just not enough of a gamepad, and the Nostromo n52 is so much more in terms of keys, comfort, programmability, etc.

- Fang Gamepad by Ideazon
The Fang might best be described as an entry level game controller, with a few advance features thrown in. It's not as comfortable as the Nostromo, but it's more comfortable then the Logitech G13, and it give you access to more keys than the Nostromo n52. This highlights one the few negatives of the Nostromo n52 and that is key access on the map of the gamepad. Let me explain what I mean by "key access on the map of the gamepad", most gamepads are single map gamepad controllers so that you cannot access additional features, or switch between addition programmed features of keys by pressing some button on the controller. By pressing a key on the Nostromo you can cycle between 8 different maps, and thus program the keys on each of these maps with different commands if you wish. However, most game play is done on a single map - and here the Fang beats the Nostromo only because you have access to more keys than the 14 keys (yes, I know, for the moment I'm ignoring the scroll wheel, the fire button, thumb directional pad, and the space/cycle map button) on the Nostromo n52. If Razer could add just 2 more keys to each of the 3 rows on the Nostromo and thus bring the total of accessible key on a single map up by 8, the Nostromo would beat the Fang. The one feature that the Nostromo has that Knocks Out the Fang and all the other controllers is the ability to spam keys while moving. The Fang, and the other controllers, you can move around via the standard WASD or you can fire and spam keys, but you cannot do both at the same time. There's a name given to players in a game that have to stop in order to fire off a gun, bow, axe, spell, etc ... DEAD. It doesn't matter if it's some FPS like Call of Duty or a MMORPG like World of Warcraft, you need to be able to move and fire at the same time, even more so you need to spam your fire and control the spam of that fire while moving - you can do that with the Nostromo, you cannot do that with the Fang.

- Logitech G13 Programmable Gameboard with LCD Display
I like Logitech, I own a Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard and a Logitech G35 Headset, but the G13 Gameboard is just too uncomfortable, where the Nostromo n52 is kind of shaped to the form your hand will naturally stay in during any gaming session on a gamepad, the Logitech G13 is not - it gives a kind of wave toward ergonomics but in the end your hand is left cramped from game play. This may seem like whining a bit but there's no need for the LCD Display. When I play, when any gamer plays, they are not "looking" at the game controller they're using ... they are looking at the game. Sure this feature is great and fine on the Logitech G15 Keyboard, but on the G13 it's a waste of money that could have gone into doing something better on the gamepad. The Logitech has the same problem as the Fang with moving and spamming keys.

- DX1 Input System
This is an odd bird, it is at its core level a small customizable keyboard. I can and still do use it for things, just not for gaming. It is too uncomfortable for long term gaming use and it suffers from the same problem mentioned with the other previous gamepads, that is moving and spamming keys.

- The PEREGRINE Wearable Interface
This too is an odd bird among the game controllers for the PC, and only recently introduced. Technically it gives you access to 30 keys via a single map vs Nostromo's 15 keys (yes, I'm ignoring the scroll wheel, the thumb directional pad, and the space/cycle map button), and it's kind of more comfortable than the Nostromo (it's well like wearing a glove after all). This isn't a dig at The Peregrine, I really do like it, but it just doesn't feel right while gaming with just it alone. My hand hurts after a long gaming session with it, while with the Nostromo it doesn't. It also suffers the same problems mention among the previous game controllers, moving and spamming keys.

Now the Nostromo is not without its own faults, as mentioned here and in other comments, they are:
- Length of USB connection cable: This is a big problem if your computer is oddly positioned, or isn't close to where you have the Nostromo. However, a USB 2.0 Extension Cable can fix that problem for $2.02 - problem solved. I know Belkin/Razer should fix this problem, but until they do this is an easy solution.
- The thumb directional pad : As good as Nostromo n52 is, it's inversely proportional to how bad the thumb directional pad is. I've got no suggestion for this other than don't use it. I use the direction keys and a gaming mouse, if Razer removed the scroll wheel and the thumb directional pad I would not miss them.
- Addition keys on single map : I've mentioned this before, and I'll say it again, if Razer would just add 2 additional keys to each of the three row of keys, giving you 20 keys to access vs 14 keys currently it would make a huge differences. This would make the controller bigger, but that would be offset by the improvement of 8 additional keys.
- Editing keystoke macros : With the Belkin version of the Nostromo n52 and n52te you could edit in the middle of a macro inserting, deleting, or updating without having to re-record the macro from the being. This could be fixed by Razer in some future software update, but for now it is a bit of a pain that I can live with.

In summation, the value and functionality of the Nostromo n52 far outweigh any of its faults. The current version, Razer Nostromo n52, is without a doubt the best game controller for the PC.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little investment yields a great device. February 19, 2011
I've used the Razer Nostromo's predecessors, the n52 and n52te, and the Nostromo is a worthy successor and upgrade.
I've also tried several of the competing products.. And the Nostromo definitely comes out on top.

The keys require minimal pressure and are short-throw. The dpad is slick and responsive. The scrollwheel adds a welcome optional input, or for scrolling thru the Nostromo's 8 modes. The hardware is up to Razer's high standards, and a pleasure to use for long or intense gaming sessions, especially in comparison to keyboards that just aren't designed for gaming.

The out of the box support is unfortunately weak, and does require some digging to get everything together.. Drivers and firmware updates are on Razer's website, so be prepared to download those and install them rather than from a dvd. Welcome to the online content age. I have a YouTube channel that focuses on using the Nostromo (actually the n52te, but the two are functionally similar).

Once you get past these setup hurdles, the Nostromo is a dream. There are still a couple gotchas, as noted above.Keybindings are single key values.. no shift, ctrl, or alt combos.. However, you can still set these up as macros to bind to.. More usefully, bind Shift to a key on the Nostromo, and multiply the number of keybinds available by using combination presses.. For instance, by binding on shift, ctrl, and alt to the left pinky column, you can multiply the number of keybingds by 4, giving an easy 48 keybinds for any game. With a bit of creativity, it's easy to get up to 100 keybinds, all in one Mode.

The Dpad responds smoothly, and is great for MMOs, FPS, and RTS games. I use it for movement in WoW, SC2, and HalfLife2.

Razer has mentioned plans to support using multiple Razer devices at once to resolve the issue of conflicting Razer devices.

Overall, while the Nostromo requires some patience and thought to setup as well as get used to.. it's completely worth the effort and the price.
