It's been a long wait for Razer fans. I finally got my hands on a wave of Tiamats through the Razer Store, and the wait ended up being well worth it. Sound quality is great and the plug-and-play access is great, since it's just a bunch of 3.5mm jacks and a USB port for power. No drivers needed!

Pros:

+ Sound Quality - The most important part of a headset, right? The sound quality is fantastic for gaming and other 7.1 applications, but music can be lackluster at times compared to other headsets (SEE UPDATE BELOW, MUSIC IS GOOD). As reviews have mentioned, this is mainly due to the size of the drivers. You can't cram five drivers in an earcup without having to sacrifice something! But in all honesty, overall sound quality is great. It might not be a perfect balance, but games like Battlefield 3 really blow you away. Listening to a helicopter fly above you and being able to pinpoint it's location without even looking up adds to the experience. It might even help a little for those not-so-good at the game!

+ Overall Build Quality - Some people say Razer products lack quality, yet I've never once had an issue with a Razer product. The Tiamat 7.1 is no different. The design might be intimidating at first, but it's both light and feels high-quality. The braided cables, as is tradition with Razer products, make for easier management and less tie-ups. The "control box" feels durable and easily rests on your desk without being forced off by cable weight. The microphone is hidden within the left earcup as well, allowing you to easily stow it upon demand. Honestly, the microphone is one of my favorite parts of this headset simply because of it's location and the ability to hide it without detaching it or pushing it off to the side. Overall, the build quality is fantastic.

I had a nightmare of a time trying to find which surround-sound headphones would be right for me. Before the Tiamat, consensus was that virtual (ie emulated) surround sound was both cheaper and better than genuine 7.1 surround-sound sets, but when the Tiamat came out, gaming-industry reviews have all been really good. However, user findings have been so mixed that I felt like I was taking an expensive risk. I'm now glad I did and I do believe that people reporting sound quality issues haven't thought (or aren't able) to adjust their soundcard settings, are using sub-quality on-board sound instead of a dedicated soundcard or are making incorrect volume adjustments to destroy the surround sound effect (more on all this later). I'm sorry that this is a very long review but I was SO fed up with every headset out there having a bunch of forum-based user reviews of doom that I wanted to address those same woeful comments of THIS headset for other tired would-be purchasers!

Things to note:

- These are GAMING headphones - not for music
- Treat them as speakers (don't pick 'headphones' in game settings)
- Sound will only be as good as your soundcard's capability
- All audio jacks and USB must be connected (not either/or)
- Bass levels should be adjusted in your soundcard settings

To cut a LONG post short, I highly recommend this headset for an excellent gaming surround-sound experience (bass is fabulous). I've given full details below for anyone wanting to know more about the headset and what to expect, and where some reported 'problems' might be a mistake by the user or lack of information from Razer.

Tiamat 7.1 is the first real analog 7.1 surround sound gaming headset.

Before purchase this headset, I have been doing a lot of research and reading many reviews about it. Praised by many professional reviewers, I decided to made my purchase.

It turns out, I have to return it to Razer and get a refund. However, the headset is work as its advertised but there are several things you have to understand before you place your order.

The "7.1 analog surround sound" does work exceptionally but it has its disadvantage in many factors. Many games and movies in today's market "DOES NOT" have native 7.1 soundtrack. So problems occurred, you have to downgrade this headset software setup to 5.1.

I have a great HTOMEGA Claro plus sound card that recommended by Razer. I played Max Payne 3, Battlefield 3, Mass effect 3 and Diablo 3, etc with this headset. After hours of tweaking in both hardware and software sides, I realized these games does not support native 7.1 soundtrack but 5.1. If I set my system input and output as 8 channels (7.1) , the in-game sound will be faulty. You can hear 2 extra channels of echos of native 5.1 soundtrack. It results in-game sound will not be as solid as it should be but fuzzy and weird.

However, once you setup the system input and output as 5.1, everything shines. It sounds the way the game should be. Solid in-game sound effect and clear directional sound.

Secondly, packing too much speakers/ drivers in the headphones really hurt the overall sound quality. If you read the technical specification, you notices the Rear and side speakers are 20mms which results in-balance sound quality. You can hear the "clear" sound in the fronts, left and right channels (30mm drivers) while the rear and sides are fuzzy or muffle.
