The Sweet Science in Mousepad Design

At competitive levels, even the simplest of elements like a mouse mat can very well be a deal maker or a deal breaker. When your gameplay revolves around split second twitches of your mouse to nail the target, every aspect of your equipment must be perfect - down to the very mousing surface your weapon lies on. Like choosing between a devastating sniper rifle and a brutal shotgun, it simmers down to your preference and playing style.

Glide

The glide of a mousing surface will be the primary factor that most gamers focus on when selecting a mouse mat. Glide is a more common term for the amount of friction a mousing surface has when in contact with the gaming mouse. A mouse mat with more glide allows the mouse to slide over it smoothly with greater ease and with less resistance. Generally, hard mats offer greater glide over soft mats due to their rigid, uniform surfaces.

Grip

The grip of a mouse mat is proportional to the amount of friction of the mousing surface. As a general rule of thumb, less glide equals more grip. Grip matters to gamers because it determines how far the mouse still slides when the gamer stops the mouse after moving it. Soft mats deliver fine control to gamers who prefer more management of their on-screen cursor compared to the increased glide of a hard mat when swiping their gaming mouse for a quick spin to look behind them or when swiping to fire at an enemy.

Tactile Feedback

The surface of a mouse mat, when magnified, is either made out of bumps (plastic, glass and metal surfaces) or weaves (cloth mats). How far these are set apart from each other and how large these weaves and bumps are determines the amount of tactile feedback a gamer gets when he moves his mouse over the mousing surface. Some gamers like a slightly coarse surface that provides a tactile feedback when they move their mouse as it gives them a better indication of control over their movements. This is very similar to grooves in the scroll wheels of computer mice that give users an idea of how much they have scrolled.

The Razer Goliathus CONTROL and eXactMat CONTROL gaming surfaces were designed for gamers who desire grip in their mousing surface and a tactile feedback when moving mouse over mat.

Comfort VS Thinner Surface

Some gamers swear by cloth mats because of the added comfort provided by the soft cloth or fabric material when they rest their wrists on the cloth mat. And we all know gamers spend hours in extended gaming sessions and if you are playing MMORPGs like World of Warcraft where raids can stretch for hours, comfort becomes a key consideration when selecting a mouse mat. The trade off for this is that gamers who prefer their mouse mats to be as thin as possible for less clutter and obstruction on their tables will not be able to enjoy the comfort advantage of a cloth mat.

Laser and Optical Surfaces

Optical sensors have set themselves as the standard in the gaming scene and are well-tuned to work well with hard and soft mats. Laser sensors, on the other hand, are a new breed of sensors that offers higher precision compared to optical sensors. New generation laser mouse sensors work off the Doppler Effect. Laser beams fired from the sensor onto the mousing surface reflects back up into the path and mixes with the original beam. This causes a flux in the power of the laser that is proportional to the speed of the mouse. Compared to the standard optical sensors, these new generation sensors do not rely on optical imaging to determine movement of the mouse.

Due to the inherent nature of how laser sensors work, they perform better on rigid, uniform surfaces like hard mats due to its sensitivity to movements of the mouse. When used with a soft mat, the sinking of the mouse mat caused by the weight of the mouse creates an increased distance between the sensor and the surface. Laser sensors might see this as additional movement causing erratic movements on the on-screen cursor.

I play some MMOs and FPS games and the dual sided pad is really nice.

Overall construction looks and feels very high quality, the mat itself is solid and the holding pad underneath is quality as well.

The two sided surface: speed or control, really actually provide different mouse speeds.

I received this after 3 days with free shipping to Virginia. This mouse pad was to replace my old school Steel Series 3s aluminum pad. The aluminum pads seem to have increased drag if the surrounding environment is cold or if the user fails to maintain it (clean it). It is also noisy and sometimes a weird grinding noise would come from them. Sometimes this occurs right after a clean too! I decided to try out these plastic mouse pads and I must say I am very impressed with my Razer Vespula. It is quiet and the wrist pad is thin enough to be unobtrusive during gaming in my opinion. I have a smaller desk and this mouse pad utilizes every available centimeter left. It stays firmly on my desk and it's made of weird smooth coat of paint over wood that doesn't offer much traction. The Vespula has a speed and control side. The difference is noticeable enough where it would make a difference which side you choose to use. I prefer the control side as I feel like it's slicker as opposed to smoother. Or maybe I'm using the speed side, I don't know :P. The price is a bit high BUT if you are willing to drop premium for a premium mouse pad, you will not be disappointed in the Razer Vespula.

Pros:
-No more grease/oil from skin rubbing off onto the mouse pad which seems to be a problem with metal pads.
-Choice between 2 different surfaces.
-Stays in place with or without the rubber mat.
-No noise at all under normal use. Even during fast movement, the sound is negligible.

Cons:
-Made of plastic which can break easily but I don't plan on moving my mouse pad around too often as my LAN party days are over :P.

I bought the Vespula for work since I use Photoshop a lot and require my mouse to be very precise (when I'm not using my Wacom tablet). I really like it. I also own the ExactMat for gaming at home. If I had to go back and choose between the two, I'd get the Vespula over the ExactMat. It's a little more compact but still gets the job done.

Having heard great things about Razer's products, I jumped on this since it advertized a smooth surface and had a wrist rest. I'm a fingertip grip mouser, so the wrist rest is a nice place for the heel of my palm. I mouse with high sensitivity, so having the mouse move smoothly over small distances is crucial. Sadly, the roughness of the "Speed" side gives rough and unpredictable resistance that moving small distances accurately is impossible, especially when moving the mouse from a standstill. The "Control" side allows better acceleration, but the roughness makes it feel like there's grit stuck on your mouse's feet.

I've used this for about a year since I didn't have an alternative until recently (a generic, thin cloth promotional pad from a university is my current surface). I started with my old tank of a G5, but when I replaced that with a Roccat Pyra, the mouse input would twitch out at least once every 10 minutes on either the Speed or Control side. I duplicated this with a Microsoft Intellimouse and Logitech MX518. I switched to my generic cloth pad and the issues went away.

I recently got a Razer Orochi, and was able to switch back to this pad without any tracking issues from it (tested the Pyra again, and it still has a problem). Still, the roughness of the Speed surface was amplified by the small size of the mouse, so I went back to the cloth mat after a week.

It looks good though...

Overall, good mouse pad. I spent quite a bit of time searching for one that would suit my counterstrike playing needs, and this one stood out. I admit that it took a while to get used to the surfaces (I ended up preferring the more coarse surface), but it only took a day or two to feel comfortable with.

Pros:
Lots of room for mouse movement.
Choice of mouse surface texture

Cons:
Razor imprint on wrist pad rubs off soon after starting to use it.
Wrist pad is a little stiff.

Absolutely love this mat, although it should really come as no surprise that there is an improvement in performance when using a Razer mat under a Razer mouse it was a very welcomed improvement for me. Night and day difference between the fast and precise sides.

When it comes to my gaming peripherals, I will always fork out the extra money for Razer products. This mat is a great quality gaming surface with two textured sides depending on your preference of more smooth for speed or textured for control. I use this in conjunction with a Razer Taipan mouse and personally love the setup!

It's a wonderful mousepad. All around it's just about perfect. The two different surfaces are great for customization and the whole thing is very firm. The wrist pad is comfy and not too big. It doesn't interfere with gameplay.

The ONLY gripe I have with this mousepad is that my LOGITECH MOUSE is that the texture of the mousepad wears away at the pads on the bottom of my logitech mouse and the plastic shavings get caught in the mousepad and wear it down. There's a wear spot in my mousepad now and i'll probably have to replace the pad and get a razer mouse. WILL BUY IT AGAIN I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
