Customer support at [...] was very helpful in sorting through which model of V-17 helmet is for children 5+ (small shell) and which is for children 8+ (medium shell). The children 5+ small one is the one reviewed here and was only available online at the time of this purchase. The model number is 97780. If you want the small one be sure it has this model number as opposed to 97778 which is the bigger one for 8+ years old.

My son is almost 5 and still this helmet was pretty loose on him. It comes with two foam inserts, one is slightly thicker than the other. However, they are not meant to be used both at the same time. We have to use them both (safety pinned in) to make it snug. I wish this helmet came with inserts that were desinged to be added to the existing foam to make it tighter instead of designed to use one insert or the other. I later saw another 5+ helmet (may have been a Tony Hawk one) at Toys R Us that had much thicker foam padding and fit him tighter.

Still he loves the helmet and it looks sharp on him. It is of high quality in my opinion.

1/8/2010 update. Helmet still great for my 6.5 yr old son. BTW, if looking for the satin pink version of this helmet, the model number is 97784 and if looking for the matte black version of this helmet, the model number is 97785.

We bought this for our 7 year old son to go with a skateboard we got him. Helmet fits great. Received very timely.

My son did not like wearing his diego helmet. It fit funny and bothered him. He doesn't mind wearing this one. It looks like one for "big boys' (he's five). It is nice looking and seems like it will protect him very well.

I bought this helmet for my son after his bicycle helmet was broken. The plastic coating was slowly chipping off, and then harness came undone and I didn't trust myself to properly repair it. He really liked the look of the multi-sport helmets. This one came and it is great. All the neighbor kids love it and want their moms and dads to get one for them too. I would recommend this product for a few reasons: First off, it is hard enough to get your kid to wear a helmet. Not very many kids want to wear a real bicycle helmet. They are bulky, have a pointed front and an not the best protection in the back. This helmet is a little more stylish, well made, seems much more durable than most of the helmets I had to chose from. Get this one for your kids, I think they are great!! It is also hard to order a helmet for kids online, because the sizing can be so confusing. This is great for my 5 year old, it came with extra pads, and I just put them in and it fit his head great. I would say this is going to get a lot of years out of it because when itake out the extra pads, it will fit him for quite a while.

Bought this helmet for my 6-yr old. It fits him great and it looks nice on him. Not too bulky like most helmets.

Got 2, black and pink! Both are great! Should last a long time! Wish the price was better! I did see them on sale at target for $11.00, otherwise excellent!!!

I was very pleased with the quality of the product. I had a difficult time trying to find this helmet in the stores. We gave it to our son for his 4th birthday. We had previously taken him to a store and had him try on the "youth" size, which was a bit too big for him. He loved it.

This helmet fits my (big) 4 year old perfectly and is so comfortable that we have to remind him to take it off! Great price too!

When I opened up the box for this helmet I was very surprised by how large it is! I was pretty disappointed by the size because it really looks pretty ridiculous on my kids' heads (though I would never tell them that). I give it three stars because it definitely seems rugged and durable. Just be aware that if you are buying this for a preschooler they might have balance issues because their heads are now the size of a beach ball!
