Bad start, great finish.....................,

This is for everyone who gave this quad a bad review because the charge does not last more then five minutes or less. I purchased this dirt quad for my 8-year-old son and like some of you I was quite disappointed with the quad's charge longevity. The quad did not last five minutes before my son was wheeling it back into the garage for a charge, and it was brand new! At first I thought like the rest of you who experienced this same problem, "It was just an expensive piece of junk". But I noticed when the battery went dead and we put it on charge the light on the charger would go from red to green in just a few minutes, a lot less then the recommended charge time. So I figured maybe the charger was no good. Luckily we also own the Razor go-cart, which uses the same charger and always worked great. So I swapped out the chargers but the go-cart still charged fine. And the charger on the quad still turned from red to green in just a few minutes and still died out fast. So I went to Razor's website and contacted their customer support. They told me the problem sounded like a bad battery and explained that even though the quad is brand new it may have been sitting around in a warehouse for months, even years with the battery connected. If the battery goes a long time connected to the ATV and never on charge, the battery will eventually go bad. The battery should always stay on charge even when not used for long periods of time. They were right! They sent me a brand new battery free of charge, after I sent them a copy of my receipt proving I bought the quad within the warranty period, less then 90 days. As soon as we received the battery, I changed it out and all I can say is "what a change"! The quad is strong as can be and I could honestly say that even driving it up and down hills on rocky terrain the dirt quad lasts well past 30 minutes, about as long as my son lasts. And it still shows a full charge on the power indicator when he is done. It is like a completely different machine from the one we started out with. So to anyone here who thinks they got stuck with a piece of junk, go right to Razor before your 90 day warranty expires and file your complaint. They have an excellent customer service department and will contact you within 24 hours, you will not be sorry. I am very satisfied with Razor and even more satisfied every time I see my son's face now on his new dirt quad.

I've seen my share of wheeled toys, and was positively impressed with the quality of this product. It has a solid frame, suspension, regular inflated tires. I'm not afraid that after a few days of use it will break, given the rough use it will get of kids at that age. I took it for a short test drive myself, and the motor was strong enough to move and adult uphill.
The shipping takes a bit longer and you have to be home to receive it. But it takes 2 people to lift the crate it comes in, so home delivery is worth the convenience. I think the only design change I'd like to see is a reverse mode. The motor control only allows forward, which if you have to turn-around in a tight space can be tricky. But that's a minor issue overall. Update (5/28): This ATV has seen a lot of use in the last few weeks, including many sliding wheel stunts, etc. After one particularly heavy right it stopped working with a blown fuse and control box. The one thing which is quite helpful is that Razor will actually sell repair parts for reasonable prices on their website, more than can be said about many other products. So if it does break, it's not necessarily doomed for the trash pile.

We were so thrilled to see someone finally manufacturing a children's ride on toy with sturdy rubber wheels that travels at more than 3 miles per hour. We bought this for my 7 year old son thinking it would be a great alternative to the "real" thing. I think this is a very sturdy ride on, however, the thing scares the living daylights out of me when the kids get on it. Just the slightest sharp turn and your child is sure to hit the pavement. We do not allow any of the neighborhood kids to ride it and have since upgraded to a gas powered atv. My opininon is that for a little more money, buy yourself the real thing. These are far too dangerous with the tipping factor and it was very disappointing how short of time the battery stays charged. If you do buy this for your child, an appropriate helmet is a MUST! I find this product to be far more dangerous than a real four wheeler. Good luck!

is it a toy, or is it the real thing?,

This is no plastic ride-on toy like Powerwheels or Pegro. It has a welded steel frame, rear suspension (with adjustable pre-tension), a rear cross-drilled disc brake (operated by hand), a 350W brushed DC motor with a pulse width modulated motor controller, a weatherproof power switch and charge port, and a low battery indicator on the throttle. This ride is metal, so it is heavy with dual 12V batteries. Two adults can easily lift it into a truck though.
The tires are pneumatic rubber tires - wheel barrow or hand truck variety (easy to replace). The wheels are steel and use precision ball bearings. Without the clatter of plastic tires all you hear is the humming motor and some chatter from the chain drive; what a relief from plastic on gravel :-). The steering has real tie-rod ends and adjustable alignment. The steering is linear but will make very sharp turns lock to lock. The grip throttle is a real throttle... You can make the quad bike creep along at a fraction of a mile per hour, with any speed in between, or go wide open for 8-10mph of action. There is no reverse. My kid manages to pull it backwards if he gets it stuck somewhere but it is heavy and doesn't free-wheel. My kid can nurse it along at walking speed if we ask him to. The brake is operated with a left hand lever. My 36" tall 32lb four year old struggles to reach the open position of the hand-brake, but manages. Another important distinction from typical ride-on toys: no engine braking. It gently coasts to a stop instead of shorting poles on the motor. Kids need to be educated on this right away. The motor drives the solid rear axle via a covered chain. There is no differential, so tight turns on pavement feel a little strange. But we didn't buy this to drive on pavement now did we? The motor has power to pull out of tight situations from a dead stop. Acceleration is smooth with the progressive throttle, unlike the on/off operation of a typical toy. Battery life is outstanding... I have seen 1.5 hours ride time in 50-60F weather in grass and gravel. My child drives it over to his friends house while we walk with him; about .5 miles round trip through tall grass and gravel. The batteries are 2x 12V 7Ah sealed lead acid in series for 24VDC. A 30A fuse protects all wiring. An intelligent charger manages the batteries, and the bike should be charged after every use (like any SLA battery). Don't let your kids run down the batteries; teach them to watch for the "low" indication. The plastic body cover has a cushioned seat, and mud flaps. When my kid pounds the mud puddles with it he gets a little splatter on him; the fenders could be a little wider. Feet are well protected in foot-well molding with a grippy surface. Good: High quality product. Very serviceable. Razor will sell you any part you need after warranty (unlike Power-Wheels). Kids learn how to use it very quickly. Powerful, more like a four-wheeler and less like a toy. It is well worth the cost (twice that of a Powerwheel four-wheeler). Having as much fun as a 49cc gas pocket-quad without the complexity or pollution - Priceless. Bad: No reverse (would have been very easy to implement in the motor controller). Higher center of gravity, high speed, high traction and sharp turning radius combination can get it up on two wheels (kid learned to manage this). No lights. Notes: Will be adding headlight and tail light, along with a DPDT switch for polarity reversing on the motor. Also adding a small tool-box for storage like the old toys had. Might modify brake lever for smaller-hands. Also adding a small trailer hitch for wagons and such.

This product was not difficult to assemble - just attach the handle bars. Charge it overnight before first use, then be careful not to leave the charger plugged in for too long. I will run for about 90 mins (my estimation) and took my 8 year old to the park (about a mile) twice on one charge, with me jogging (then walking) behind.
The charger (or some electrical part) burned out about 75 days after purchase and the Four-wheeler stopped working. I called customer service and they sent me a new electrical part with no instructions. I'm somewhat mechanical so I was able to disassemble the Quad and get it put back together in about 90 minutes. My 8 year old is happy again and after about 5 months the Quad is still running. I will add that this four-wheeler is pretty heavy and sturdy. It moves at the pace of a swift jog and you should make sure your kid wears a helmet while driving it.

Razor Dirt Quad Electric Four Wheeler,

This seems to be a very durable 4 wheeler and great for a kid just starting out and learning the ropes of 4 wheeling. No trouble thus far, except if it is sitting in your living room, you might want to disconnect the power so the kid doesn't drive it off into the entertainment center!

I have two children that own a dirt quad. The first child got one for a birthday gift, the second liked it so much that she got one for christmas ! These are quite well built, and very capable of handling difficult terrain. The only problem you have to avoid is too much water exposure. The quad can do some puddle jumping, but dont soak it.We have been very pleased with these quads, Just wish that charge time was less, or that the battery was easily accessible so another battery could be charged and changed to extend play time. This is the only reason I did not give the product 5 stars.

My 5 year old was thrilled with this product. As he normally drives safely at 10 mph, it would have been better to get a gas ATV. The battery does not last more than a half hour and since the battery is not removable, we can't charge a back up battery.
We have also found that when it is very cold out, he can not ride it as it makes a clicking noise. He still loves it and we are glad we got one for him.

Battery Problems,

This review is from: Razor Dirt Quad Electric Four-Wheeled Off-Road Vehicle (Red) (Sports)
My child LOVED this gift when he came down stairs and saw it Christmas morning. Two laps on it around our house and he hated it....the battery will not hold a charge. We followed the directions to the letter when charging for the first time and riding for the first time. However, he can't ride it for more than 10 minutes before the battery is dead. You can't take the battery out and get a new one without taking the whole thing apart, which stinks. Very disappointed that my $330 didn't get my son more than a 10 minute ride. I can get more fun for my money at Six Flags!

Razor Quad,

This review is from: Razor Dirt Quad Electric Four-Wheeled Off-Road Vehicle (Red) (Sports)
I bought this for my sons 7th birthday. He has ridden it almost everyday for 2 months. Sometimes several times in a day. We recharge the battery in a few hours when the light on the charger turns green. Not sure if this is right since the directions says to charge it for 12 hours, but so far it works well. I gave it 5 stars because I am comparing it to the other plastic battery powered vehicles that we have. The Razor quad has a metal frame and rubber tires, this makes it very durable. It can also go places that the other vehicles cannot. We also have a Barbie jeep which is very beat up after 1 year. The Razor is alittle more expensive than the plastic vehicles but it is worth it and if you keep checking you can find the Razor at a discount. So far I have only let my 7 yr old drive it
and he always wears a helmet. Maybe when my daughter turns 6 I will let her on it as well. My only complaint is that it is a little small, even at 7 my sons legs are uncomfortable, but he still has a blast. One more advantage is that because it is battery powered it is very quiet and does not bother the neighbors. If you have close neighbors they will appreciate this. Update 9-22-07: The quad is still going strong, have only had 2 small issues. 1. Unable to steer - one of the nuts on the steering linkage was too tight. I loosened the nut and went ahead and lubricated all the steering joints, no steering problems since. 2. Quad slowed or stopped on its own - at first I thought it was the chain, but I just had to adjust the brake and everything was ok. My kids all still love it. |
