More tracks but not more hits,

On first glance, this might appear to be a better Pam Tillis retrospective than 1997's Greatest Hits as this collection has 16 tracks to Hits' 12. In actuality, Greatest Hits is the far better collection. Four of the tracks found here (Fine Fine Very Fine Love, It's Lonely Out There, You Can't Have A Good Time Without Me, and Mandolin Rain) weren't even singles while Betty's Got A Bass Boat barely dented the charts. Not included here are such major hits as "All The Good Ones Are Gone" (Tillis' most touching recording ever), "Cleopatra, Queen Of Denial" (her most humorous), and the gorgeous, reflective "River And The Highway." All of those three are on Greatest Hits. This set even passed up the chance to include her post-Greatest Hits singles: the hypnotic jangler "I Said A Prayer," the poignant "Every Time," and the exceedingly hearfelt "Please." So... if you can only afford one Tillis collection, definitely go with Greatest Hits. Unlike this uneven compilation, there's not a dud in that bunch.

Till you hear Tillis,

This album is a good piece of contemporary 90s country. Pam has a good soprano voice and can really put feelings into songs. The songs on here are different from each other and also pretty substantive, no silly fluff or just same old stuff. I didn't quite feel it enough for 5 stars.

Pam's best of the nineties,

Pam was very successful for a few years with her brand of contemporary country music, but the momentum was not maintained in the late nineties, although she is still active and still making great music. All the tracks have appeared on at least one other Pam Tillis album, and eight of them were included on Pam's 1997 greatest hits package, so Pam's diehard fans will not find anything new here. This was only my second album of Pam's, but the quality of her best music, as showcased here, is very high indeed, and makes me wonder why I didn't already own more of her wonderful music. My favorites here are Mi vida loca (her only #1 hit) and When you walk in the room (a cover of the sixties classic, and a #2 hit for Pam), both of which first appeared on her Sweetheart's dance album (which is the best as well as the most successful of her original nineties albums). If you haven't got any of Pam's music, this is a great place to start. |
