neglected jazz gem, April 18, 2007
This review is from: Rca Victor Jazz Workshop (Audio CD)
RCA released a lot of jazz in the fifties , some good , some not so . this is one that ought to be better known . pianist schaefer put in some time with the famous boyd raeburn orchestra , then had a brief jazz career on his own , before pretty much giving up jazz for classical music . this short ( a little over 30 mins. ) cd is the best title available under his name . schaefer plays 4 songs apiece with 3 differently configured groups , piano trio augmented with 2 trumpets , 3 altos and 4 trombones . this sounds like it'd be gimmicky ( esp. 4 trombones ) but it works relly well . half of the tunes are originals penned by schaefer , but the arrangements on the standards practically make those new as well . if you like offbeat , hard-to-classify , but mainstream jazz from this period , this is as good as it gets .
