Vocaloid is a voice sythesizer technology that was developed by Yamaha and licensed to various other companies who publish it. The reason why Yamaha doesn't sell the software directly is because a company who has the rights to sell the software needs to take voice samples from a real person, who then compiles it, and then brands that voice database with a specific name as well as the music genres it's ideally suited for. That'd be too much work if Yamaha did all of that work by themselves.

Hatsune Miku is the first Vocaloid database that has changed the way music is viewed and created in Japan forever. It all began when users uploaded music that contained her voice onto Nicovideo, (Japan's equivalent of Youtube), just a few days after Miku was released. A few of these people made a name for themselves because the songs that they composed sometimes rivaled that of professional musicans, and the end users were encouraged to try and sell them as the fine print from the publishers specifically states that anything made using Vocaloid software is equivalent to composing music using any other type of instrument.

And what you're looking at here is the first commerical album containing music sung by Hatsune Miku and composed by a group who calls itself livetune which was a top seller at Amazon Japan's site for quite some time after it was released over there a year ago. I'm not talking about top in its genere either; I'm referring to overall sales. Yes, the album is that good, but before I go any further though, here is the track listing for the album:

1- Anthem
2- Packaged
3- over16bit!

I may be a huge Vocaloid fan, but I'm definitely slow on the draw with this album as it took me a while to actually listen to the songs on this CD. But I'm glad that I bought this as it's truly a great album and I'd say a collector's item for Vocaloid fans as this was the first commercially sold Vocaloid album, even before another famous Vocaloid composer Ryo aka Supercell. Heck, even the box is beautiful, the art was done by Redjuice, a well known artist when it comes to doing Vocaloid art as figures have been made of his pictures of Miku.

The genre this falls under in techno/pop(My iTunes says electronica/dance but it's basically the same.), which is the genre Miku is best suited for in my opinion.(Of course you'll find her covering almost all genres on the internet.) There's quite a few slow songs and some really catchy, quiker songs that always makes me want to dance. The songs Packaged, Last Night, Good Night, and Strobo Nights were also featured in Miku's first game, Hatsune Miku Project Diva, which I also own. Another song on this album, Finder, was featured in the sequel to it, Project Diva 2nd but remixed.

KZ, the composer, definitely has a unique style when using Miku, like most Vocaloid composers, as he(actually I don't know KZ's gender...) sets her to a higher pitch(Last Night, Good Night for example is so high I thought for a while no human could sing it until I saw fan-made covers of it.) and the songs themselves have a very nice techno/pop feel no matter what song it is. It's hard for me to pick a favorite song but I'll note the ones I like listening to the most. Anthem, the first track, has a really good dance feel to it to me and I really like how slow it starts out and has a "fuzzy" like sound in it.

I may be a bit behind the time since I just found this gem a few weeks ago. It did not take long to fall in love with this figment of others imagination. You-Tube introduced me to the lovley voice of a computer. When I first herd her singing a version of the ending song to the game Portal I was hooked. The more I looked the more I found and I just had to have the CD once I found out about it. It is very eazy to forget that this is a computer program singing and not a person. I do not speak Japanese but the message still comes through in the songs. If you have a wide taste in musice and love trying new things I strongly this is a great CD to add to the collection!

I can't say enough about the above reviews. Cocoa in particular has created one of the most helpful and informative pieces here. This import album is expensive, but it is Not available on iTunes, and it is well worth the price for an archetypal (big word of the day) piece of music like this. With only one or two exceptions, I rated every piece on the album with five stars. The opening cut, Anthem is ethereal and along with most of the other songs here, is a hit on YouTube and many other places on the Internet. Take a look at it and them when you can. Fans have created literally hundreds (maybe thousands) of animated videos using these songs! Packaged is, as cocoa says, a wonder and I personally like the included piano version even more. Over16bit, Shooting Star, Light Song, Lyre Song, Finder, and Strobo(Strobe?) Nights are all hits on YouTube and as dance tunes. They are irresistible as dance tunes. Even an old man like me can't help dancing to them. No kidding. And last but not least, Last Night, Good Night has become iconic. It again is ethereal, the best word I can think of for this soaring synthesized voice. All in all, this is the best Miku Hatsune and Vocaloid album that I have heard.
