Book Description

October 1997
A new line of books reveals how technology is changing how we do business...

How strategic business-wide use of Web technology can boost efficiency, sales, and profits

Authors Tim McEachern and Bob O'Keefe vividly illustrate that new Web technology must be considered and managed within the context of a company's entire business operations. With the help of success stories from industry leaders, they demonstrate the impact the Web can have on everything from product development to supplier relations, marketing and sales to personal management styles.

* The first book to show how strategic use of Web technology can positively impact all aspects of organizational growth
* Includes real-life examples from Johnson & Johnson, GE Price Waterhouse, United Technologies, UT Carriers, and other industry leaders
* Provides a framework for integrating EDI, Intranets, logistics software, and other Web-related technologies into product design and overall business operations

TIM McEACHERN (Albany, New York) is founder and President of One World Interactive, developers of Web sites for a number of Fortune 500 companies. BOB O'KEEFE (London, England) is a professor of information services management at Brunel University in London and has been a visiting professor at the Rensselaer Polytech's Lally School of Management and Technology.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Authors Tim McEachern and Bob O'Keefe describe Re-Wiring Business: Uniting Management and the Web as "an exploration of the business advantage that can be gained from the Web." The advantage they speak of will come from connecting employees to as many other people and as much information as possible, both inside and outside the organization. The best chapters in this regard are the ones on intranets, marketing, public relations, retailing and business-to-business connections, and their strength comes from anecdotes, some of which are drawn from the authors' consulting practice. The book's principal drawback is that it is not written for a clearly defined audience. Although it is described as being for managers in general and about strategy rather than technology, many technical terms, such as agents, data warehouse, thin client, RealAudio, T3, object-oriented, C, Java and URL, appear with little or no explanation. -- Upside, Stephen E. DeLong

From the Publisher

These days no business can afford to ignore far-reaching Web technology. Here is the first book that clearly and engagingly outlines how strategic use of Web technology can positively impact all aspects of organizational growth, including product development, supplier relations and marketing and sales. Includes inspiring success stories from industry leaders and provides a practical framework for integrating EDI, Intranets and other Web-related technology into overall business operations. Highly knowledgeable.

I've read virtually every "Internet" book and found this to be singly the best. I'm recommending it to everyone. Great advice, great examples. All around great.

4.0 out of 5 stars GPA - Good Practical Advice, August 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Re-Wiring Business: Uniting Management and the Web (Hardcover)
I found the book extremely pragmatic, sometimes to the point of overkill, but better that than no examples at all. Points are well made, found the strategy discussion excellent and timeless, and overall the authors seem to avoid technology recommendations, focusing instead on strategic matters.

Overall, well worth the money. Felt like a conversation with the authors rather than a stuffy, "this is how you do it or else" usually reserved for this category.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, June 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Re-Wiring Business: Uniting Management and the Web (Hardcover)
The word "management" in the subtitle threw me. This book is mainly for managers who are looking to make money, rather than manage, on the web, While Chapter 4, "The Network Inside," is on Intranets, and Chapter 6, "The Medium is the Message" (how's that for cliché?) is on newsgroups and other feedback mechanisms, the bulk of the book focuses on marketing and retailing. That's fine, but it's not centered around management/organizational issues. What's left is kind of interesting but not exactly content-rich. The "pragmatic" aspects of the book, while they should enthuse sales and marketing types, are not developed enough to give direction to the technophiles. I was hoping for something with a little more meat.
