2.0 out of 5 stars Of limited utility
I am a 3 handicap golfer and hoped the Refiner driver would help identify a recurring problem I have off the tee, which I think is happening at the top of my backswing. I was hoping a hinged club would breakaway when I was swinging improperly, but not this one. In fact, it seems to breakaway when you do something right, rather than something wrong. This is probably...

I bought this driver to replace my Medicus Driver (which I accidentally broke). It was irreparable so I got this at half of the suggested price of the Medicus.

This is a lighter and MORE REALISTIC weight than the heavier Medicus Driver.

An adjustable tool comes with the hinged driver to increase the sensitivity to which it can break down or decrease the sensitivity to stay straight.

I ordered directly from the company website which allowed me to select for club length, club grip (Training Grip versus Standard), and type (Men's, Women's or Junior).

The loft is a 10 degree and I opted for a 44" shaft with a training grip.

The value of the club is the immediate feedback regarding errors in the swing of a golfer. Just like the original clubs, Medicus 2000 iron, it hinges if the tempo is too fast, whether you take the club back closed or open, whether you cast the club, shift weight incorrectly or follow through incorrectly.

Who is this for? 1. Someone who doesn't play on a regular basis but has been trained with basic fundamentals. 2. Someone who has problems with consistency with the driver. 3. Someone inconsistent with the woods, in general. This is not a cure all for all golfers and only experience will reveal if it works for you. For higher and mid handicap players, it will help immensely. For advanced golfers, it probably has little benefit.

Will it cure your slice? There are many reasons for a slice so it is difficult to say. Will it help ensure consistent contact? Yes, good or bad, you WILL hit the ball. You will likely "Top it", "hit it fat", or "hit it thin" less often than you do.

This won't teach a swing but it WILL refine it.

This is not for a novice, as it will break down and make the user frustrated. If you think you have a perfect swing, try the club with the highest sensitivity to flaws. The flaws will be uncovered - this is certain. The advantage is that it can be hit like a regular club by allowing you to hit balls with it, unlike weighted drivers/irons.

Hitting with this club is quite challenging, until you have grooved your swing. However, with proper practice, I am, now able to hit it as far as my regular driver. I have had the driver for 6 months, and it has held up in terms of durability.

This training club is probably the fastest way to perfect your swing plane and tempo, short of a PGA professional standing next to you on every facet of the swing.

If you're having trouble with the driver, this is a training aid that can be extremely useful in uncovering the flaws in your swing. If you're a seasoned player and have no problems with your swing plane or tempo, this will not be helpful.

Through many months of use with hinged clubs I have gained confidence and consistency with both types (driver and irons) of clubs. The Refiner Driver is exactly in line with the more expensive alternatives.

I highly recommend this club, if you're struggling with the big stick.

UPDATE:

Not only does the improvement work with the driver (which I have been hitting straighter than ever), but it has helped me with my fairway woods and hybrids. Since you are using a sweeping motion, the longer shaft helps ingrain the type of mechanics you need.

After 6 months of use, I have learned to straighten out my ball flight to a fade or draw. With constant use, I have added about 15 yards to my drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars ReFiner 460 cc, November 1, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Refiner hinged driver trainer made me aware of a couple of my swing flaws. Like most amateurs my swing is not always bad or always good. My most reoccuring problem is poor tempo. The ReFiner shows that both in the backswing and downswing. Practice, practice.. Swing plane errors also showed up. It's a good product for someone who has knowledge of some basic swing techniques.

This club is so frustrating at first but w/ a little persistance and really being patient w/ learning how to swing it, it really pays off. It has helped completely cure my slice. Worth the purchase and would do it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product at a Better price., March 30, 2008
I don't know why the other users didn't recieve any benefit from this club. Maybe they didn't loosen the hinge enough to where it would break. I have the medicus 5 iron and I decided to go with this driver because the price was way better than the medicus. Does the exact same thing for less. This will help you get your swing on plane and help you with your tempo as well. I use this with the the swingyde and that is where you can really start to see the benefits from both products. Shots are going straighter and farther. I recommend this product to anyone who as ever thought about buying a hinged swing trainer.

NEW 2008 REFINER 2 WAY HINGE 46OCC DRIVER SWING TRAINER

I got instant results. I am not sure why others had a problem. I am about an 18 handicapper who didn't drive the Ball all to bad until recently I started to get the dreaded duck hook. I received this yesterday (a Friday). Watched the video Saturday morning (for those who seem to have a problem, I would venture to say they didn't set the torque right. They give excellent instructions on doing that), practiced in the yard and went to the Driving range. Not one duck hook

I think this Club, if properly used, could help the mid-handicapper immensly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Of limited utility, March 17, 2008
I am a 3 handicap golfer and hoped the Refiner driver would help identify a recurring problem I have off the tee, which I think is happening at the top of my backswing. I was hoping a hinged club would breakaway when I was swinging improperly, but not this one. In fact, it seems to breakaway when you do something right, rather than something wrong. This is probably because the club is hinged along the swing plane, so when you swing off plane, there is less pressure on the hinge than when you are on plane. I tried a couple of really bad hacking downswings just to test this theory and sure enough, the hinge did not release.

I will have to concur with some of the other comments that this club is good for a higher handicap golfer trying to develop a smooth tempo. In reality, all this club does is hinge when your swing gets jerky. It is otherwise not a very accurate diagnostic tool. And you can't hit balls with it because it hinges at impact, making you hit the the best slice of your life.

I did order it with the grip trainer grip which is useful get your hands set properly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quite a waste of time and money, October 18, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am now in the process of returning the item .. Had done a lot of internet research and was ompletely disappointed .. And this happened on day 1 itself .. the clu was not breaking when i was swingiong with it and yet when i would try a swing with my regular driver, it would go spinning o the right .. so essentially my problem was not addressed at all .. it may have some very fringe benefits .. perhaops for a person who has just started golf .. but if you are even slibghtly more than a total beginer - this would be a completel waste.
