Early genius of Jim Post.,

This review is from: Reach Out of the Darkness (Audio CD)
Certain albums have always been able to bring me back to a very exact place and time and this is one of those. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim and Cathy back when they were playing around Chicago clubs back in the late 60's and saw their tremendously talented live band featuring members of The Buckinghams and Siegal-Schwall.
This album is not a representation of Friend and Lover as a live act. This is an album produced around Jim's songs, but a little too heavy on the studio gimmicks. When left alone on songs like Room to Let and The way we Were in the Beginning,Jim's unique 4 or 5 octave voice soars. There is a little wierdness tucked away in each tune, though. It is very playful. Special notice- If you can, on first listen, skip the first three songs as they may turn you off before you get to the meatier stuff. Reach Out of the Darkness is still a great song and got Jim and Cathy into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame- One Hit Wonders. There are great liner notes and Jim Post is alive and well at www.jimpost.com and still performing. Only 4 stars, because there are several singles from the next couple of years that were much better than the tracks here and would have made an excellent enhancement to this beautiful period piece. Peace

I ordered this to complete my 1968 top 100 countdown for their hit "Reach Out of the Darkness" for a 40 year anniversary party on New Years. That chick had a voice! I had never listened to any of their other music before, so it was interesting hearing the rest of the album. While I can see why none of the other songs had any airplay that I know of, there's a couple of interesting tidbits that make purchasing this album worthwhile.

I was having a pretty hard time looking for several of the songs on this CD. I tried several music services and finally found it at Amazon. The CD is very good quality and plays perfect. There are only three songs on it that I care for but that is typical of CD's and me. If you are looking for the song "Reach out of the Darkness" this is the CD for you. This was the only place I could find that song.
