Editorial Reviews

Friend & Lover, Reach Out of the Darkness

Like a lot of late-’60s rockers, husband-and-wife team of Jim Post and Cathy Conn came out of the folk scene (the Chicago folk scene, in this case) to score on the charts with this album’s title cut, which was adopted as something of an anthem by the protest movement during what was indeed a "dark" time for American politics. The resulting album, which featured the instrumental and production talents of Joe South and Ray Stevens among others, is an utterly charming blend of ‘60s pop-rock, soul and psychedelia, long requested by our customers and reissued here with notes containing extensive quotes from Jim Post himself! A Collectors’ Choice Music exclusive!

4.0 out of 5 stars Reach Into the Past January 21, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I ordered this to complete my 1968 top 100 countdown for their hit "Reach Out of the Darkness" for a 40 year anniversary party on New Years. That chick had a voice! I had never listened to any of their other music before, so it was interesting hearing the rest of the album. While I can see why none of the other songs had any airplay that I know of, there's a couple of interesting tidbits that make purchasing this album worthwhile.

4.0 out of 5 stars Early genius of Jim Post. November 13, 2005
Format:Audio CD
Certain albums have always been able to bring me back to a very exact place and time and this is one of those. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim and Cathy back when they were playing around Chicago clubs back in the late 60's and saw their tremendously talented live band featuring members of The Buckinghams and Siegal-Schwall.

This album is not a representation of Friend and Lover as a live act. This is an album produced around Jim's songs, but a little too heavy on the studio gimmicks. When left alone on songs like Room to Let and The way we Were in the Beginning,Jim's unique 4 or 5 octave voice soars. There is a little wierdness tucked away in each tune, though. It is very playful.

Special notice- If you can, on first listen, skip the first three songs as they may turn you off before you get to the meatier stuff. Reach Out of the Darkness is still a great song and got Jim and Cathy into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame- One Hit Wonders.

There are great liner notes and Jim Post is alive and well at [...] and still performing.

Only 4 stars, because there are several singles from the next couple of years that were much better than the tracks here and would have made an excellent enhancement to this beautiful period piece.

Peace

Originally released in 1968, as this was the sole lp by the husband and wife duo of Jim Post and Cathy Conn - from Alberto, Canada. Tunes I got the most out of were "I'm A Man, You're A Woman", the album's title cut "Reach Out of Darkness" (I certainly remember this song - although until now I never knew who performed it), "Ode To Dandelion" and "If Love Is In Your Heart". Thought that this lp's eleven tracks definitely possessed a psych, pop and sort of a soul element. Recommended for fans of Jefferson Airplane, Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel and possibly The Association or the Fifth Dimension.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to find item. November 11, 2006
Format:Audio CD
I was having a pretty hard time looking for several of the songs on this CD. I tried several music services and finally found it at Amazon. The CD is very good quality and plays perfect. There are only three songs on it that I care for but that is typical of CD's and me. If you are looking for the song "Reach out of the Darkness" this is the CD for you. This was the only place I could find that song.
