5.0 out of 5 stars To Answer Any Questions You May Have
The DVD is programmed so the DTS 5.1 stream is the default audio when you insert the disc into your player. If you do not have a 5.1 system, especially one that supports DTS 5.1 or is not set-up properly to playback 5.1 with the correct cables, then you will not hear the audio stream if you press play immediately. You will need to go the set-up screen and choose one of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad audio sync on interview
After having purchased other products from UMG : The Temptations, Smokey & the Miracles and The Supremes, I was jazzed when I purchased The Four Tops. The songs are a well rounded bag of hits from different sources. The problem is in the interview section with Smokey and some other artist, which was so badly out of audio sync and so unwatchable that I returned the dvd and...

5.0 out of 5 stars To Answer Any Questions You May Have, November 12, 2008
This review is from: Reach Out (DVD)
The DVD is programmed so the DTS 5.1 stream is the default audio when you insert the disc into your player. If you do not have a 5.1 system, especially one that supports DTS 5.1 or is not set-up properly to playback 5.1 with the correct cables, then you will not hear the audio stream if you press play immediately. You will need to go the set-up screen and choose one of the other audio streams which will be playable on your system.

To comment on Sam's review below, there are 4 audio streams on the Four Tops DVD, the fourth audio stream contains the original broadcast audio for every TV performance on the DVD, especially the songs that were lip-sync'd. The DVD was programmed so that the audio streams contain remastered audio for those that want to hear the best possible performance in audio streams 1-3 (Stream 1 - 5.1, Stream 2 - Stereo Studio Remasters, Stream 3 - Stereo A Cappellas) while the fourth audio stream was included for the purists like Sam who want to see and hear the clips as they were originally broadcasted. All of this is detailed in the artwork and listed on the set-up menu.

Please make sure your system is set-up properly to playback DTS 5.1 (correct cables - optical or coaxial - not red&white stereo analog cable, player/receiver decodes DTS) or make sure the the correct audio stream is selected from the set-up menu that works for your home theatre system before you start to view the content.

5.0 out of 5 stars ooo,ooo,ooo Baby I Need Your Lovin, November 9, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Reach Out (DVD)
This is a great dvd.The performances are great, especially Baby I Need Your Lovin,in which there is an alternate version with strings being heard in the background, which makes the song sound even better which I didn't think was possible. The alternate version is incredible.I've played Baby I Need Your Lovin over and over again and I still can't get enough. All of the performances are great. The acapellas are great also.Hearing the 4 Tops alone is breathtaking.Their harmonies are special/unique,their lead singer was special/unique.The harmonies plus(Levi Stubbs)made an explosive combination together. They were a great unit, that had great singing ability that captured millions of hearts,if not billions. The acapella for Baby I Need Your Lovin is great, especially the beginning with the ooo's,it is magical, actually better than magical, its the best

The interview by Abdul Duke Fakir is very insightful. He gives insight about the group and the songs. His initial feelings about how he felt back in 1966 about Reach Out before it was released will surprise many, and the story behind Its The Same Old Song is very interesting as well.I've already watched it twice and I've had it for only 3 days now,I'll probably watch it like 4 more times before the week is over.

This dvd is a must, the performances, the harmonies, the leads by Levi Stubbs, what more can I say purchase it.

R.I.P Levi Stubbs,Renaldo "Obie" Benson,Lawrence Payton

4.0 out of 5 stars A Long Wait! - WELCOME RELEASE!, November 12, 2008

What a long wait we have had to go through for this FOUR TOPS reflection DVD back to the 60's and early 70's performances, it has been most unfortunate that early reaction was soured by the audio problems. Thanks to Jeff at Universal and also DVD King here for explaining it so clearly, but not all who purchase this DVD will read our reviews here, I have not experienced this problem on other Motown Artist Reflection DVD's

Back to THE FOUR TOPS and any performance for me would be A ++ and it so good to see these cuts from the 60's especially. My first single I ever bought aged 12 was "Baby I Need Your Loving" by the FOUR TOPS a re-release and they were my first live concert aged 14 which I travelled 28 miles (a long way at that age) on my own without telling anyone. Never then did I think it would lead to be coming a Teen Radio DJ and playing the FOUR TOPS music I loved and getting to meet and interview them so many times.

I just wish that the main programme though would not have been done as a documentary style presentation, also I feel there are some better cuts of some of the performances such as "Ask The Lonely" which is my all time favourite track.

Yes I like others have paid a lot of money for every FOUR TOPS release possible on DVD and this is a good price and a welcome release, it just saddens me for production and editing I can only give it 4 out of 5, but that does not reflect on THE FOUR TOPS and should not put anyone off purchasing this DVD.

LEVI STUBB'S become a Friend and will be sadly missed, I feel as if part of my own life has been cut away, but No One can take away the warm memories he gave and now has left us, just to see his smile in this DVD is worth the price alone - we will miss You Levi, but Thanks! for all you gave us - Buy This DVD!

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad audio sync on interview, March 4, 2009

After having purchased other products from UMG : The Temptations, Smokey & the Miracles and The Supremes, I was jazzed when I purchased The Four Tops. The songs are a well rounded bag of hits from different sources. The problem is in the interview section with Smokey and some other artist, which was so badly out of audio sync and so unwatchable that I returned the dvd and got a refund. I'm assuming my copy was not the only one as someone else here has complained about the same issue. Don't these companys have any sense of product quality? Too bad I really wanted to have this for my collection, but I'll wait till it hits the bargain bins or the audio sync issue is corrected.
Times are tough, money is tight, so please don't put out a product like this, its an insult to us as fans and most of all to the late and great artists.

As a fan and friend of the Four Tops for 42 years, I highly recommend that you buy this DVD now. It is marvelous! I have paid $125-$250 for their other DVDs on public television telethons. Don't be sorry. Enliven your holidays with a "blast from the past."

5.0 out of 5 stars THE SOUND IS AMAZING, February 21, 2009
By
Karen Edwards (SAG HARBOR NEW YORK United States) - See all my reviews

I am writing this comment on behalf of my husband JOE LAURO who is the Director/Producer of this DVD. I just read a "unhappy" review left by Jeanette Gary Lloyd who commented that the DVD has no sound. Please note that this DVD was produced in 5.1 SURROUND SOUND and utilized the original MOTOWN MASTER TAPES to create AMAZING sound. THERE IS SOUND ON ALL OF THE COPIES!!!!...The menu page of the dvd states CLEARLY that a minor adjustment on your remote is neccesary to get the sound..the sound certainly is there but you will have to follow this one-step adjustment to get the 5.1 sound. Not sure why Ms. Lloyd didn't notice this or ignored it as this is the standard with any and all 5.1 audio releases...remember, this is a MUSIC film so the audio is most important and we have presented the absolute BEST POSSIBLE sound...all that you need to do is follow the simple instructions!!

ENJOY

5.0 out of 5 stars An Insider's View to a Great Group, April 25, 2009
This review is from: Reach Out (DVD)
I also had trouble getting the audio to work, at first. I just adjusted my DVD player's audio button until I found sound and I was good to go. It ended up being a whole lot less of an issue than expected by some of the posted reviews. I can tell you that this DVD is wonderful, gives a view of some of the background of The Four Tops and how their career started and bloomed, plus several performances I had not previously seen. It sort of takes the iconic status of the Tops to the back burner, and gives a sense of what they were like as real people, although they are an obviously iconic group! Very happy I made this purchase, the never before viewed performances are priceless.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great DVD except for..., January 27, 2009

The performances are great and the background info by Abdul "Duke" Fakir and former Motown personnel are great before each song. The only problem is that in the special features section the "bonus interviews" are interesting but the video and audio are not in sync. Which is why this only rates four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia at its Finest, November 24, 2008
This review is from: Reach Out (DVD)
I absolutely loved this - having grown up during the Four Tops heyday, this brought back so many memories of the era, their music, everything. I was glued throughout. The footage is wonderful, the concerts and tv shows were really great to watch. What a privilege it must have been to be the interviewer! Abdul Duke Fakir was wonderful and so obviously deeply touched in telling his story. The accapela addition is great. If you're a fan or just want to hear a great story and listen to music at it's finest, don't miss this DVD.
