Book Description

Katie O'Roark is thrilled to learn that Jenny House is being rebuilt. After the fire last year, Katie thought she could never return to the camp, where she spent the summers with teens like her who faced medical odds stacked against them. But thanks to Richard Holloway's efforts, Katie and her longtime friends Lacey and Chelsea will work as counselors once again. They'll be joined by Megan, Morgan, and Eric, who are newcomers to Jenny House but who have experienced the generosity of One Last Wish Foundation.

It's not until Katie arrives at camp that she discovers that Josh Martel, her former boyfriend, is also a counselor. Being near Josh again brings back a flood of old emotions for Katie. And when Josh confronts unexpected adversity, Katie knows she has to work out her feelings for him. Through the heart transplant she underwent years ago, Katie miraculously received a gift of new life. Now she must discover how to make the most of that precious gift and choose her future.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Grade 8-10-Romance and life-threatening illnesses abound when several characters from previous series entries are reunited at Jenny House, a camp for seriously ill young people and their families. Former campers Katie and her ex-boyfriend, Josh, are reunited here as counselors, and readers learn that track-star Katie is actually a heart-transplant survivor and that Josh's brother was the donor. A summer working in close proximity brings the couple's romantic feelings back to the surface, feelings that are forced into the open after he has a terrible riding accident that threatens to leave him paralyzed. The author portrays the young adults well, showing their insecurities and strengths. Although death does hover in the background, the story is not depressing.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book! November 10, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I absolutely loved this story, I could read it over and over again (and I have too). This was one of the best books yet and a perfect addition to the OLW series. Even if you haven't read all of them yet they are explained in the first chapters (I skipped that because I am an avid McDaniel fan and knew about them) I thought the chapel building was touching and the ending was the bomb. Katie and Josh are my favorite couple of any of the books (other than Ethan and Leah) and they belong together forever, keep up the good work Ms. McDaniel! And please come visit the Southern states on your tour...I've got a stack of books waiting to be signed...

5.0 out of 5 stars My very personal favorite OLW book! May 6, 2002
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book is my favorite in all books in general. Jenny House, as you know (if you read this series, of course), was burned last year. It is now rebuilt and as beautiful as the first one. Megan Charnel was invited to stay in the Jenny House, including Eric Lawrence and Morgan Lancester, who are also new. The old people were Katie, Lacey, and Chelsea. Sarah is also new this year. This book is so sad because it's the last book in the series. It's partly sad, but sort of funny. There are romance in here too. So catch this book. I wished Ms. McDaniel could make another sequel followed this book!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great Josh and Katie book! May 26, 2002
By Katy
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book was really cool, how they brought together most of the characters from the previous One Last Wish books(Eric, Morgan, Meg, and Sara), but where was Dani(Morning Song)? It was a great ending for Josh and Katie's story, as well as Morgan and Meg's. But it leaves yu hanging about Eric, Chelsea, and Lacey. Out of all the One Last Wish characters, Eric and Chelsea have always been my favorite, so I was real excited that they were going to meet, but I was pretty disappointed, because this book wasn't told through either one of their point's of view. It was told only through Katie, Morgan, and Meg's point of view. So I really think Lurlene McDaniel should write another Jenny House book (I love it when the book's setting is Jenny House) told from Eric, Chelsea, and Lacey's point of view, and with Jeff. I don't really like Lacey, but I think it's important for us One Last Wish fans to find out what happens to these characters, since it doesn't tell you in this book. That was the only thing wrong with this book, it left you hanging. But it was a great ending for Katie and Josh, and Meg and Morgan, but disappointing if they aren't your favorite characters. But it is a must-read for any One Last Wish fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book November 26, 1999

Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a great book for the One Last Wish series conclusion. It was funny, serious, and one that shall be loved by many. I do wish, though, that more was said about Chelsea.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific book...very moving September 9, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Turtleback
So. Josh, Chelsea, Katie, Lacey have returned to Jenny House. After last year's devastating fire, they never expected to return, but with some help from "angels" and the One Last Wish foundation itself, Mr. Holloway has rebuilt it. Now, they are joined by Meg, Morgan, Eric and Sarah all previous charcters from other One Last Wish novels. Together, all of them learn what being brave and the true meaning of courage. Katie's slightly unsettled, when it comes to her and Josh, but when Josh faces "unexpected adversity," she must decided her feelings for her.
This was a terrific novel, and shows the true meaning of life. All of these charcters face horrible odds, yet they still overcome it, and live life to the fullest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lurlene McDaniel November 18, 2000
A Kid's Review
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I think Lurlene McDaniel's books are great. It has kids like us facing life-or-death situations, and it teaches you that things can hppen to everybody, for a reason....for a purpose. My parents ask,"Why do you like sad stories??" I tell them that "It's because she is a good author, ahe writes stories that aren't the same....she writes about kids who are sick, sad, happy, and mad." I think Lurlene McDaniel is the greatest author of all,and I hope that everyone gets a chance to read at least 1 of her books, and reads other ones, like I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 14 yr. old reader July 7, 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This such a good book. This was my first One Last Wish book that I've ever read. It really makes you thankful for what you have. I like this book so much I'm getting all the others. At first it was confusing so I'm going to get them so I can read about everyone else. I think its neat the way Katie just stayed by his side the whole time. And how she was always trying to be happy for him. This book has inspired me to write. So maybe one of these days you'll see one of my books. I really love this book and suggest anyone and everyone to read it.

Katie O'Roark is happy that after a fire, the Jenny House is being rebuilt. It isn't until she arrives at camp does she realize that her former boyfriend, Josh Martel, is working there. Years ago, Katie had a heart transplant and received Josh's brother's heart. Being near Josh again has brought back feelings for him and she doesn't know how to sort them. Suddenly something happens to one of the characters and everyone realizes whats going on. This experience helps Katie sort her thoughts and put them in the right place.

More About the Author

I was born in Philadelphia PA, grew up (mostly) in Hialeah FL, graduated from the University of South Florida, Tampa FL (go Bulls!) and currently live in Chattanooga TN---I'm an American citizen by birth, and Southern by the grace of God.

I have a brother, three years younger, married, and mathematically gifted. I am totally without math skills.

The books I write, the topics and subject matter, grew out of my firstborn son's diagnosis of diabetes at age 3.
Infinite reward that comes to me from my work.... when a grown reader lets me know that reading my books inspired her to seek a profession that helps others. I have wonderful letters saying, "Today I graduated from nursing/medical school."

Now that's a gift of joy!
