First, I want to say that I'm a HUGE Reacher fan. Heck, just check out my screen name, that should say it all. When I found out about this book, and it will be a series, I was all over it. I couldn't wait to start it. I'm sorry I did.

The plot: Two FBI agents, Kim Otto and Carlos Gasper, are assigned to find Jack Reacher, for a special job with the FBI. When the two agents go to Margrave, they're soon involved in helping Roscoe (from Killing Floor) solve the murders, and in return, the two agents want to know everything there is to know about Jack Reacher, and where he might be. That's all I want to say about the plot.

There are so many things wrong with this, where do I start? Let's start with the characters. Kim and Carlos, the two FBI agents. These two are the dumbest FBI agents that I've ever read about or saw on tv/movie. Both of them are idiots. Kim thinks that Reacher is a "bastard", "Killer" and a "psycho". She has pretty much based this on nothing. She can't find him in any FBI files (which I find laughable.) I know Reacher is "under the radar", but the FBI has nothing on him? He's even helped them in the past, but yet, the FBI has zero on him. Nothing? Nada? I just find that hard to believe. Kim also felt that Roscoe is "unbalanced" and also a dirty cop. The same with Finlay, she think's he's a dirty cop too. What a complete tool she is. She also has some negative thought on her partner as well. She's a joke. I also found it annoying how the two FBI agents are goofing on each others racial background. Really? That's how this author wanted to portray her FBI agents? That was dumb, and it brought the "plot" (and I use this term loosely.) down. Kim also spent a long time having an internal dialogue to herself about the coffee in Margrave. Honestly, it was so annoying at the useless thoughts of Kim that we're treaded to. The 'gem' of the story is when she thought that Reacher was the murderer to the murder that they helped solve. The author had no idea of the character of Roscoe. Roscoe seemed grouchy and moody.

The writing style is amateurish, awful and choppy. We get so much useless information and scenes that don't add anything to the plot. It's there to just take up space and make the book longer. There was nothing there to keep the reader hooked and wanted to learn what was going to happen next. The characters did things that made no sense and was confusing. There was a diner scene that was completely useless. Honestly, there was a whole lot of nothing.

What also bugged me what that the author is riding Lee Child's coat tails. I know she and Lee are (according to her) friends. She's stealing Child's characters for her own selfish use and is killing them in her amateurish writing. Can't she do something on her own and not steal Child's characters. She just wants to be on the Jack Reacher bandwagon, and milk it for what it's worth.

This series is a joke, and there's nothing good about it. Save the cost of the book, I wish I had.

There are many examples of books based on another author's world or that use another author's well-known character as part of the back story. Courtesy would suggest that the original author should be asked for permission and offered the opportunity to review the book prior to publication to protect the integrity of their own stories and hard-earned reputation. There is no indication that Diane Capri extended this courtesy to Lee Child, and I came away suspecting that the title and foundation for this book were no more than a cynical ploy to trick Lee Child fans into thinking that this book was in some way related to the Jack Reacher series. Other than providing an excuse to start the characters on their quest, and getting dropped in occasionally in reference to the old crime that has given rise to the current ones, the Reacher reference is completely irrelevant to the story.

That said, most of the book is well-plotted, once you accept the assumption that senior FBI personnel would deliberately mislead and withhold information from agents while sending them scurrying around the country (and beyond) on a personal whim, impossible timetables and taxpayers' money. The dialogue between the characters is tight and amusing, if sometimes too self-consciously witty. The main characters themselves are appealing, despite some quirks that seem to be there because the author has been taught that characters should have imperfections to make them more human. Why she picked the particular flaws (Otto's fear of flying, Gaspar's hidden injuries) is never explained. There are some events that gnaw at the reader's sense of logic, but broadly, the story is fast-paced and flows well to provide a pleasant escapism.

However, about three-quarters of the way through the book, it all starts to unravel. New characters pop up without explanation or apparent purpose, mysterious hints are dropped about the main character's back-story but are not explained or explored, divergent old and new plot threads are gathered and hastily scrunched together in a way that badly damages the plot credibility, and the climax and denouement leave the reader frustrated and unsatisfied. The relationship with Jack Reacher remains elusive (and frankly, illusory).

In summary, most of the book is enjoyable if you abandon your expectations of any comparison with Lee Child or of learning any more about Jack Reacher pretty early, but the messy and poorly constructed ending leaves loose threads everywhere and the parting feeling is of disappointment. The clumsy "caught a glimpse" device at the end is so cliched as to be embarrassing.

It's very clear that Ms Capri plans to milk the "hunt for Reacher" idea in subsequent books, but I won't be reading them.

Lousy attempt to capitalize on the Reacher character, The plot is non-sensical. The main characters are idiots with little or no proper development. The story is all over the place and the resolution is a head-scratcher. I want my money AND my time back.
