Book Description

August 2004
Sometimes being an African American in this society seems to feel more exclusionary than inclusive - as if we somehow have to prove how we 'fit in' to the great scheme of things. Well, no more. Baba Koleoso Karade, aka Nashid Fakhrid-Deen, JD, has undertaken the task of presenting us with a manual, a guide if you will, that can be used by groups across the Diaspora to assist their young men in recognizing and understanding what kinds of beings they truly are through a rites-of-passage program.

Reaching Black Males Through Spirituality is a guide that not only advocates a way to overcome the danger and destructiveness in our society, but also connects our life in America with the holistic wisdom of our ancestors. Using the foundation of African principles, Reaching Black Males Through Spirituality is a real and practical textbook that teaches our black males how to become MEN in America. Koleoso tackles issues from teenage sex to racism and the problem of street violence, offering healing guidance on the central problems facing the African American Community.

About the Author

Nashid Fakhrid-Deen, J.D. aka Koleoso Karade is well known and respected for his willingness to follow his spirit’s direction and his soul’s timeless wisdom. In his words he "seeks to pierce the illusion of matter and become conscious of his divinity." He has traveled extensively studying and building unparalleled competence in well established spiritual traditions while remaining rooted in his African ancestry. His studies clearly indicate his commitment to learning those sacred philosophies and practices that help the seeker manifest the Creator, their Divine Self.

Nashid is a ‘Pipe Carrier’ in the Lakota tradition and conducts Sacred sweat lodge ceremonies around the country. He has participated in the Sacred Sun Dance and Vision Quest.

Like most, Nashid was raised in the Baptist Church yet his spiritual quest has lead him to being an active Minister in the Nation of Islam, and Imam of traditional Islam. He has been called ‘shaman’ and was also initiated by a Hindu Yogi, Rashun Nathji (may God be pleased with him). In 1998, Nashid was initiated priest of Shango in the Ifa-Yoruba tradition by Baba Ifa Karade. In 1999 he was initiated as a high priest, Babalawo of Ifa. His African name is ‘Koleoso Oduneye Karade'. He is fondly referred to as "Baba", "Babaji" or "Baba Koleoso." Koleoso, which means "build the house of the seer" attests to his spiritual gift as a diviner. His book, "Tradition and Transformation: A Philosophical Treatise Based on the Ifa Religious System," attests to his ability to integrate his vast spiritual knowledge and bring that knowledge through African tradition.

With 25 years in higher education administration, he holds several degrees and is the recipient of numerous awards. However, after all is said and done, Nashid wants only that his bio reads,

"Nashid, one who is seeking to pierce the illusion of matter and become conscious of his divinity."

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! Everyone should read this book. We each have a role in reaching our Black Males, August 10, 2007
This review is from: Reaching Black Males Through Spirituality (Paperback)
I purchased this book for a male friend and ended up reading it before him. Now, I need to buy one for myself. When I finished reading this book I was in tears. I realized the pain I have caused the men in my life because I was operating from my own dysfunctional baggage not considering they each had a common thread of dysfunction that's encoded in their cellular memory. This book is very well written with plenty of references for those that want to go deeper into any of the topics. To my brothers, this book is truly about the journey within and your connection with your higher power to heal yourself. If you follow this template and teach your sons you'll reclaim your personal power and oh what a WONDERFUL world this would be. Your relationship with your mate/wife/girlfriend will be taken to an entirely new level when you learn to Know Yourself, Cleanse and Purify, and Live in Alignment with Absolute truth. My sister's if you are having a power struggle with your mate then you need to read this book. I am absolutely humbled that Baba Koleoso can so simply and clearly articulates the struggle that our men have within themselves. This book will give you a glimpse into that part of your boyfriend/husband/mate that he seldom reveals. The next man that comes into my life will be glad that I read this book and that I passed it on to him because I truly comprehend the pain that needs to be healed. Thank you Baba, this is a book I'll read over and over again.
