Smooth, provocative, lush and utterly professional, this independently produced CD samples the moods and styles of composer and keyboardist Scott Long. Minor in tone, mostly electronic in nature and grounded by laid-back beats reminiscent of Enigma, most of the songs on "Reaching Calm" remind me of the work of Amethystium. There are occasional wisps of vocalise floating above the compositions, but the music is predominantly instrumental. That said, if you're a fan of groove-chant fusion (Enigma, Lesiem, etc.) many of these tracks would be perfect to sing along with, adding your own Gregorian or world chant; the deep, broody, laid back mood Long so deftly sets is perfect for that. Inamongst the synthesizer voices, an acoustic-sounding piano makes an occasional appearance too, with rain and surf noises in the background (tracks 3 and 8), adding a touch of utter New Age tranquility to the album. I'm always delighted to come across "Indie" artists who can do it just as well on their own as the corporate-sponsored groups do, and Scott Long does just that with "Reaching Calm." Congratulations to him, and I look forward to his next release!

Scott Long has created a timeless masterpiece when it come to instrumental music allowing the listener to do just as the title suggest... "Reaching Calm." The sounds are perfect for many occasions - entertaining, meditation and relaxation, soothing the mind and spirit and excellent for children. My daughter often asks to listen to the cd and sometimes even makes up her own soungs to go with it. This CD is perfect for anyone looking to relax while they listen - from rush hour traffic when it's much needed to soaking in a warm bubble bath. Enjoy it.
