Editorial Reviews

Product Description

This book is for those who are attempting to launch a massive engineering project or expedition with minimal financial or human resources. It is not about specific hardware or software technical methods; it is about the meta-hack of developing enough support and buzz to get your project to take on a life of its own.

Large corporations do this with brute-force methods (unlimited money and people), but individuals face daunting hurdles when competing for mindshare and resources. Without the ability to leverage larger forces as a sort of "martial art," it is exceedingly difficult for a lone geek to escape the gravity well.

This little book is the collection of "trade secrets" that have made my 25 years of adventures possible... the art of working with sponsors, media, and volunteers to get an insanely ambitious project off the ground and keep it moving on its own momentum.

This review is from: Reaching Escape Velocity (Kindle Edition)
I was fortunate enough to meet Steve Roberts at Sun Microsystems when he was working on BEHEMOTH. Prior to that, I read his column on Compuserve, typed on a TRS-80 model 100 on an even earlier bike. Steve has always been an inspiration, who challenges my thinking about what is possible. I couldn't believe that someone having this much fun playing all day could also make it a viable lifestyle. But he has always found a way to combine his passions and turn his work into play. He left cubicle-land and never looked back. But a lot of people standing in his wake always ask themselves "how does he do that?"

Well he is finally sharing his secrets. After inspiring you to follow your craziest dreams, this is a book that will give you the nuts and bolts of how to do it. While the book is geared at a fairly specific niche of activities, it is good reading for anyone into gonzo engineering, gonzo marketing, getting a groundswell of support for anything, project management, PR, etc. It really gives you the tools for thinking outside the box, and then finding unconventional funding and support for making things happen. This is a textbook in innovation on the human level. Dare to dream, read the book, and then dare to implement!
