Book Description

June 30, 2006
In this best-seller the eminent spiritual guide Henri Nouwen describes three movements in our search for union with God.

The first movement, from loneliness to solitude, explores our experience of our own selves and our longings. The second movement, from hostility to hospitality, focuses on our relationships with others. In the third movement the challenge is to progress from illusion to prayer. Nouwen s plan leads us through good times and struggles, joys and sorrows, to joyful union with God.

Nouwen says the journey is frightful as well as exhilarating because it is the great experience of being alone, alone in the world, alone before God. As we are transformed in love, painful passages and tensions become signs of hope.

From AudioFile

With clarity, Murray Bodo narrates the spiritual insights and convictions of Henri Nouwen, renowned Catholic priest and mentor. Nouwen presents a systematic three-step plan for living spiritually to achieve union with God. Step one addresses personal isolation and our longing to feel connected to something greater than ourselves. Step two concentrates on our relationship to others as we move toward hospitality. Step three focuses on the reality of prayer and its importance for personal growth. Nouwen is convinced that it's through our search for personal answers and connectedness that we find hope and confidence to persevere in a search for God. Bodo's skilled narration makes this complex subject understandable when listened to in short intervals. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

4.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Direction for a Spiritual Life, December 19, 2006
The author, Henri J.M. Nouwen, is a Catholic Priest and writer. In this book he outlines three stages of spiritual growth: reaching out to one's self, then to others, and, finally, to God. He offers examples from literature, scripture, and life to help listeners through struggles with inner restlessness of faith.

Erik Synnestvedt narrated the unabridged audiotapes I had. Anyone from any walk of life that has an interest in understanding a Christian's spiritual life can benefit from this book. Do your self a favor and read/listen to this small book.
