Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book provides a concise and clearly written account of solid state chemistry, which is well suited to an undergraduate course of this subject ...I recommend this book - it covers the subject well in a way that is accessible to students, and represents excellent value." (Physical Sciences Educational Reviews, No 6, June 2003)

"... an excellent introduction to solid state chemistry." (Chemistry in Britain, September 2000, p 55)

"... a valuable and helpful introduction ..." (The Times Higher Educational Supplement, 1 March 2002)

"... an excellent text ..." (Aslib Book Guide, Volume 65, No 9, September 2000)

"... a good addition to a school library." (School Science Review, December 2000, 82, 299)

"... suitable as the accompanying text for first- or second-year introductory courses in chemistry or materials science departments ... will also be of interest as background reading for sixthform teachers." (Education in Chemistry, Vol 38, No 2, March 2001)

From the Back Cover

The last twenty years or so has seen a change in the perception of solid state chemistry, in particular the scientific significance of understanding the relationship between chemical structure and physical properties. As such, it now forms an important part of both mainstream chemistry and material science degrees.

Reactions and Characterisations of Solids is designed as an introductory text with plenty of illustrative examples to reinforce the essentials of the topic. In the first few chapters, the fundamental principles of elementary crystal chemistry are introduced, together with the principles of both preparing and characterising materials in the solid state. Some elementary thermodynamics are also included at this stage to introduce the idea of bond strength as a method of determining and predicting compound stability.

General physical properties such as electronic and magnetic behaviour are discussed, together with specific topics relating to solid state materials such as non-stoichiometry. Furthermore, several solid state materials are described in detail, relating the fundamental properties and structural behaviour covered throughout the book to real systems and working materials. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
