5.0 out of 5 stars The Power of Black Women
When we put our mind to it we can accomplish anything - - as Ms. Woolridge proves in this powerful page-turner!

The book is captivating on so many levels. There are social issues, romance issues, race issues, class issues, relationship issues, and there's even some mysstery and suspense.

This is a must read...And when your friends ask to borrow yor copy,...

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING, I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN, October 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Read Between the Lies (Hardcover)
This is a book worth reading. Lori Byrant Woolridge is a talented writer. This is an outstanding first effort. I found the story capitivating, I simply did not want to put it down. You will enjoy the story as well as Mrs. Woolridge's style of writing. Without giving anything away, I found the subject matter interesting, though it is somthing that I never think about. In that vein, I also found it a bit educational. But in the end, it was a novel with believable characters that was extremely entertaining to read. I certainly felt a full range of emotions angry, worried, sad and finally a sense of relief and elation. You will deny yourself a treat if you pass this one by. It is a story about people and how they deal with their ghost and about freedom and self-discovery. It is about greed and blind ambition. Finally, it is about the power of love, it's destructive and healing forces. ENJOY!!!!

Another smilar book that I enjoyed was "Welcome To The World Baby Girl" By Fannie Flagg. I would give "Read Between The Lies" a better rating then this book, because it developed the characters in a more interesting manner. "Read Between The Lies" draws you in quicker and holds your attention better. Though by the end, these two books offer very curious subjects and interesting and exciting stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-read!, January 9, 2000
This review is from: Read Between the Lies (Hardcover)
When I first started reading this novel, I thought it was your typical jealousy-type novel between two females. However, as the story continued, I became very impressed with how the author continued to develop Stephanie's neurotic character and Gabrielle's willingness to trust too many people, the book became engrossingly good! I found myself reading this at work and any moment of free time! I hope to see more from Ms. Woolridge

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge by that horrible cover!, April 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Read Between the Lies (Hardcover)
The cover is misleading. First, a drawing of a woman's lower body where one leg is shapely and the other chunky is a turn-off. The cover is also misleading; it suggests that the model (I presume it was supposed to be the model because the legs were so long) was black, which might have caused confusion among readers. Then there was that ridiculous blurb by the publisher comparing Ms. Woolridge to Bebe Moore Campbell and Olivia Goldsmith. I personally am tired of these characterizations. Ms. Woolridge has her own style, and it's excellent. I found this book very enjoyable. It described the good life without getting caught up in a lot of brand names like so many other authors like to do (though maybe a little heavy on name-dropping of actual people.) The story was engrossing, I kept telling myself I would read "just one more chapter" when it was time for lights-out. I felt the events leading up to the conclusion were a little over the top (Stephanie's behavior), but I recommend this book highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Page Turner, December 22, 1999
This review is from: Read Between the Lies (Hardcover)
"Read between the lines" was a very, very entertaining and pressure pumping. I say pressure pumping because it made you want to reach in the book and strangle Stephanie's character. This novel is so captivating you will not be able to part from it easily. I suggest you be prepared to be up until the wee hours of the morning reading this novel. You will tell yourself "I will only read one more chapter" but by the time you realize it, you would have read ten. Trust me, you will not want the 384 pages of this novel to come to an end.

I commend the author for not using slang, broken english or profanity in her writing. The absense of these distracting and annoying attributes made this novel flow perfectly and very easy to read.

I suggest you run not walk to the nearest book store to get your copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD READING, December 16, 1999
This review is from: Read Between the Lies (Hardcover)
READ BETWEEN THE LIES was a very interesting book 3 women whose lives are joined together through the art of modeling and public relations. Gabrielle lives with a secret which she fears if and when she does become sucessful would destroy her. Felicia has martial problems of trying to become her own person with something that she can identify with but her husband, Trace, wants her to become a mom and devot all of her time to the home and him. Then there is Stephanie, who wants it all and will not stop at nothing to get it, even if it means destroying friendships. I liked this book, but I was more drawn to Felicia, who tried to satisfy her husbands wants but still took the chance to give her self a profession for herself. To me this was a good book, quick in reading did not drag but kept moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Curl up with a great book!, October 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Read Between the Lies (Hardcover)
I loved this book. It told a great story and the characters were real and very likeable, except for that nasty Stephanie, but she was still kind of funny. I learned alot about a subject I never even thought about before--illiteracy. Its not often that you get such good writing and interesting plots in a first novel. This is a smart, well conceived and executed book. Perfect for all these rainy weekends.
