One of the best!,
By Muiracane (Michigan) - See all my reviews

I have had this album since it can out and it has always been one of my absolute favorites. The singing is as good as it gets and the band is top notch. Check out the guitars solos by Jimmie Vaughan on Sugar Coated Love and Ti Ni Nee Ni Nu, Derek O'Brian on You Can Have My Husband and David Grissom on Shake Your Hips. If you want to know what a blues band should sound like, this is IT! I wish this same line up would get together and record something new.

Great!!!,

Lou Ann Barton really shines on this album, one red-hot mama! The fast ones are terrific, especially "Te Ni Nee Ni Nu" and "Rocket In My Pocket" (REALLY strange to hear a woman singing that one!!), but the stand-outs are her mid-tempo and slow ones. The best of those are "You'll Lose a Good Thing" and "You Can Have My Husband," but you have to have this album if straight-ahead blues shouting is what gets you off.

A Little Bit of Austin While Driving in Your Car,
By
This review is from: Read My Lips (Audio CD)
After a long wait, I finally was able to see Ms. Barton perform with Jimmy Vaughn's band during the Summer 2006 Bob Dylan minor baseball stadium tour. I had purchased this record on vinyl, but I had not listened to it in years. Coming back to it was a real treat. Her voice is strong and sassy. The record is loaded with Austin guitar players (including Denny Freeman who now plays with Dylan), and the players sound like a real band, not just a bunch of guys putting together a studio album. So, if you cannot make it to Austin, or if you are on your way there, play this record and feel the blues.

11 yeaars later and this still is one of my all-time faves. The voice the musicians the song selection and the album cover are classic. Whyshe has yet to record a followup for Antone's or anyone else is a total mystery......

This is just great, great stuff. Are you sure this isn't Wanda Jackson's illegitmate daughter? If you like blues and rockabilly it doesn't get any better than this in this day and age. If you don't like this CD--you just don't like music!

Lady Sings The Blues,

I bought this one on vinyl when it first came out and have been listening to it regularly ever since. This is one fine blues album and a must for any serious blues collection. I was lucky enough to see Lou Ann at Antone's in Austin back in the early 90's and she "smoked". She had much the same band then as on this album; the great but unheralded Derek O'Brien on guitar, George Rains on drums and Reese Wynans on keys. The material on this album is top notch, covering swamp blues, soul, R&B and texas blues. This album is right up there with any, yes any, blues album released in the last 25 years; I kid you not. It is a real shame that Lou Ann didn't record a follow-up but there's still time as most of the participants are still alive and active, except the late, great Clifford Antone and the late, exceptionally great Doug Sahm. Lou Ann is now Jimmie Vaughan's main squeeze (well, she was a year or so ago) and sings in his ripper band; she deserves much more on all accounts!! Come on Lou Ann, give us another one just like the other one.

A Solid Effort,

A very good effort from Lou Ann Barton. I had never heard of her before a friend in college at the University of Boston turned me on to her. This CD moves from slower blues to rhythm and blues with a very strong common demoninator, which is Lou Ann's voice. Very strong and hypnotizing. Her voice pulls you in and wraps you in a cacoon. A very good introduction to Lou Ann Barton. I can't wait to get more and see what else she is up to.

Blues.........Texas style!,

I rememer seeing Lou Ann on stage in Austin and she and her band were hot! This CD has a lot of great songs that bring back memories of living in Texas. This is my 2nd copy and I love cruising with these tunes! You should know there are some great Texas musicians on this CD including SRVs brother Jimmie Vaughan (Fabulous Thunderbirds).
