4.0 out of 5 stars My son loves this story, May 3, 2008

Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
We got this story with the Read with Me DVD set. I was worried that my son (2 and 1/2 years old) would find this story scary. I almost put it away until he was older, however this is his favorite story on the system (we have four total). We watch this over and over again. He is able to answer the questions correctly, without much prompting. He refers to the "Wild Things" as animals he recognizes...a moose, a lion, a bird, etc... Therefore, it isn't scary to him. He was even doing "a little dance" like the animals on the story. I really like this system. He is able to read a book and answer comprehensive questions in a fun way. I would definitely recommend this product.

3.0 out of 5 stars nice -- but not completely compatible w/ regular DVD remotes, May 12, 2009

Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this DVD, unaware that the disc is programmed for use with a special "Read To Me" remote controller. The disc WILL play on a regular DVD player (region 1), but you will soon discover that the normal navigation buttons do NOT work on a regular remote. HOWEVER, by experimenting I found I was able to play the story by pressing single NUMBERS on my remote controller instead of pressing the usual arrow buttons. I don't know why the manufacturer couldn't have just encoded this disc as a regular DVD, but then of course, if they had, you wouldn't buy their special controller. Well, I'm still not going to buy their special controller just for a few buttons. Just don't expect a toddler to figure it out.

Of course, Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" is an endearing, timeless story, full of imagination and entertainment. The animation, which features the original book's illustrations, contains minimal movement in this DVD, but is still effective for a bedtime story.

I might have preferred a more animated narrator -- someone like Robin Williams or Whoopi Goldberg. As is, the narrator is a bit stiff.

I look forward to seeing the full-length movie based on this book, arriving sometime in 2009 or 2010. I know that the screenwriters will stretch the story out by adding material, but hopefully the story won't lose too much of its original charm.
