Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-Within an open, appealing, and approachable format, this attractive book uses poems written by children in early elementary grades as examples of the various poetic forms. Selections by Hulme and Guthrie are also used to illustrate specific points of instruction. Throughout, small reproductions of paintings accompany discussions of mood, form, perspective, etc. The examples are appropriate for many age levels and suit the subject matter well. This book is a good addition to collections that already include Myra Cohn Livingston's Poem-Making (Harper, 1991), which is more suitable for an older audience. Paul B. Janeczko's fine Poetry from A to Z (S & S, 1994) uses well-chosen poems by well-known poets as examples.-Jean Pollock, King Country Library System, Seattle, WA

When my third-grader came home with homework to "write a poem," this was the best book I found to teach the tools needed to write a poem.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to Write, Recite, and Delight in all Kinds of Poetry, April 15, 2000
This review is from: How to Read, Recite, and Delight in All Kinds of Poetry (Library Binding)
I teach fourth grade and use this book as a basis for my Friday creative writing lessons. My students love it and can't wait for language class that day. If I forget they are quick to remind me it is poetry day!
