5.0 out of 5 stars From a teacher, this is pretty neat!
As a Spanish teacher and Spanish curriculum author (Flip Flop Spanish), I'm always looking for great tools to pull out in my classes and keep things fresh and interesting. This is a neat book! You cut out all the little cards inside, and then use the cues to put together your own sentences. I haven't yet used the CD.

My own children did not jump at the chance...

This is a very basic book. Definitely for the beginner. However, it can be somewhat confusing for a child because the author is not consistent in his meanings for the various words. I did like the CD because it helps in pronouncing the words.

My own children did not jump at the chance to use these cards, but once I sat down and made a few examples by tossing cards out like a poker player, they joined in, especially when we were al making silly sentences. I am bilingual, and so this was a fun event in the household, and I believe in the class, it will prove useful as well. But if you are a beginner, get a foundation with another book first, then add this in to build confidence and usefulness in your language learning.

The best age for these cards is five and up. Younger than that, the children are more focused on just looking at the picture rather than using them to communicate and speak in Spanish. -Being able to read fairly well might also be a prerequisite for your child too, to cut down on frustration. I will listen to the CD this week and update the review soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners and those starting to make sentences in Spanish, September 28, 2007
This review is from: I Can Read and Speak in Spanish (Book + Audio CD) (Hardcover)
My 5 year old and I started learning Spanish together. We tried multiple books, CD's, etc., which did not help. This book is one that actually taught us a lot, and we retained what we learned. Since the same picture is repeated every time a particular Spanish word is used, there is visual reinforcement of the word. I would highly recommend this book for beginners.

For those just learning to speak spanish from ages 8 to 80 this book, CD and flashcard package makes learning spanish extremely easy. My 11 year-old daughter was struggling in her 6th-grade spanish class and this combo really helped. Very soon you'll be prepared to buy another program to get to the next level.

I loved this book and recommend it to everyone. I teach Spanish and used it with my third grade. They are now speaking in complete sentences about so many things! It is wonderful.

I got this for my 7 year old. Previously we had tried a couple of ways of learning Spanish, and she could understand and respond to basic sentences (give me the blue ball, put on your shirt, etc). But she was very unwilling to speak.

It took us 6 days to go through this book, but by the 2nd day she was walking up to total strangers speaking Spanish. The pictures totally worked for her. There are only a few lessons, so only a few grammatical structures are covered, but she really understood them and could use them.

Sequel please!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars almost perfect, October 25, 2010
This review is from: I Can Read and Speak in Spanish (Book + Audio CD) (Hardcover)
we have been trying to get our 6-year-old interested in Spanish for years, and she has always treated it as an "eat your vegetables" kind of thing - something she'll grudgingly go along with if nagged enough. Until we got this book, as a present. She actively _asked_ to go through it, asked for the CD to be played in the car, for the first time ever she _wanted_ to learn Spanish! Many thumbs up!

The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars, not 5, is because, as other reviewers have mentioned, the author's accent on the CD waxes and wanes - I would guess he's a native English speaker. In addition to usually mis-pronouncing "perro" as "pero" (or even worse, sometimes "pewoh"), he routinely has "en" rhyme with "ben" (it should rhyme with "gain", there is no short 'e' in Spanish), misses the leading stress on "árbol", etc. Sigh.

Please note although Maurice does a decent job, he is apparently not a native Spanish speaker as his accent ebbs and flows a bit; in particular he does not roll his r's - perro comes out pero!

Hard cover, bright bold pictures, clear presentation. The only downfall...the book does not explain: su, una, and un differences. They might in the cd which is rather dull for adults to listen too as it keeps saying, Very Good, Good Job, and other 'rewarding' remarks. Which for some okay, but it tends to annoy and slow things down a tad those remarks generally only work if the teacher is present in the classroom not while your listening to a recording, otherwise, the kids will enjoy his rather clear presentation. I'm keeping this out for my families kids to get interested in learning to read-speak Spanish. And kind of a sources for me, as well. There is another downfall now that I think of it. The stickers (which are great) are not reusable. It would of truly been beneficial for restickable pictures...Other than that, a great book for a beginner...(book says 4 and up, site says 4 to 9; it's a good book.Your call).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beginning Spanish Book, June 5, 2008
This review is from: I Can Read and Speak in Spanish (Book + Audio CD) (Hardcover)
I bought this to teach my 4-year-old Spanish and am very pleased. The book is filled with colorful, simple images engaging for my child. It is easy to follow and uses repetition and visual aids to teach Spanish. The voice on the accompanying cd is friendly and easy to understand. The flash cards are great (easy to tear out and thick enough to use) and I like the suggestion of building sentences with the cards. I am excited to continue through all the lessons and learn together with my child.
