The material is excellent but only 20 of the 112 stories are on the CD - so it isn't clear how one is meant to learn to speak the material, or read it correctly ( isn't reading just speaking in your head). Why the authors couldn't be bothered putting all the material on the CD and charging the higher price is a mystery.

Very disappointing. The book is full of errors! Very serious grammar and spelling mistakes. Just to mention the most serious ones: on page 98 the title, "Architetto italiana"! The adjective has to agree in gender with the noun it refers to; "architetto" is masculine, and therefore the adjective that accompanies it should be masculine too. The correct is "Architetto italiano," and not "Architetto italiana." After each section there is a test, "Prova la sua comprensione" (Test your comprehension). The correct is "Provi la sua comprensione," or, if you want to be informal, "Prova la TUA comprensione." The way it's written it is grammatically incorrect. And in many other pages there are similar mistakes, errors in agreement verb/subject, noun/adjective, faulty punctuation, etc. You have to be careful with that when you're teaching a language. Also, there is a bilingual glossary on each page, that is supposed to enable you to read the text without having to look up words in a dictionary. The only problem is, they often explain the easiest words, which students past the most elementary stages are supposed to know, and they don't explain the most difficult and troublesome words - so you have to look up in the dictionary anyway! The parts read aloud by native speakers are good, but the book in in bad need of editing.

I very much recommend this book. The readings are very informative and entertaining and a translation of a lot of terms is provided with each reading. It is probably the most useful recommendation we got this year from our Italian instructor and the price is very reasonable. The audio CD is invaluable for the pronunciation.

This book is above my present conversational level, but I am learning new words
and proper sentence structure through it. I recommend it for people who need
to become better conversationalists.

Read and think Italian is a great introduction to the Italian language. The audio really lets you improve your understanding and pronunciation. But, not all of the readings are on the audio. It would be better if all the readings were also on the CD. The translations included with each reading allow you to get a general understanding even if you don't understand every word. I would recommend this book.

I like the layout with the important words and phrases in a sidebar and the text with those words bolded. The topics are lively with typical everyday experiences of the casual traveler for new and intermediate students of Italian. My only criticism is that the audio CD only contains selected chapters. I recommended this to a class of struggling intermediate learners to fluent speakers, and they all like it.

The stories are for people who have studied Italian for at least two years, in my opinion. Half of the words and phrases are translated in the right and left margins of the pages. The other half of the words you must look up on your own if you do not know how to translate them. There is a CD. The print is small. These true stories are interesting and informative.

The book I purchased did not have a CD with it. I overlooked it; otherwise I would have bought them together. I have used this book being in a small social group bent on learning. I do like the selection of the subject matter, but where I find it lacking is a clear presentation for learning. The sentence structure does not enhance one’s learning even at a higher level. Trying to translate the sentences even after having looked up all the words in a dictionary is highly challenging. The text enhances my knowledge of Italian culture in a nutshell, but does not contribute to my learning in a helpful way.

The sidebar on each page gives the English meaning of Italian words presumably to allow the student to forego the use of a dictionary. This effort is lamentable. Like others pointed out before, words which are less rarely used are not given in the sidebar. Other common words which one learns during the first hour in an Italian lecture, are profusely repeated on many pages. For example, the translation of word, l’acqua, is given, probably several dozen times. It is aggravating to find this, because it is a word anyone without any Italian knowledge would know. Similarly, this is true for many more words. I wish we had selected one of many other books to learn from.
