A handy colume of handpicked selections
on September 9, 2012
Exactly as advertised.
Though one reviewer here seems to be imposing pedestrian expectations on this book, kindly ignore such banality. This book is short, sweet and to the point. It offers idiosyncratic lists of books based on the tastes of independent booksellers from around the country, along with brief profiles of the booksellers and the bookshops in which they work. If you had traveled the country and asked well-read booksellers for recommendations or discussed reading habits, this compilation is what you might get. In addition, it serves well to introduce independent bookstores one might visit. If you are tired of Oprah or books catering to "the general reader" (in other words, the bland supermarket fiction target of major modern publishing houses and their advertising machine or the 'classics' of numerous lists), or if you wish to avoid the generalized "what should I read now" lists, all of which are frighteningly similar in selections, then this particular book is a handy companion.
