Book Description

September 1, 1999
One of five new additions to our popular Read and Understand series, More Read and Understand Stories and Activities-Grade 1 provides teachers with a comprehensive resource of stories and skills pages to supplement any core reading program.

Features 23 stories, each followed by four or five pages of activities for practicing reading skills. Each of the stories is followed by activities for practicing reading skills such as:

- comprehension

- vocabulary development

- phonetic elements

- word attack skills

Stories range from fantasy to the real-life activities experienced by children of this age. Each story consists of 4 half-page sheets, suitable for cutting apart to make little individual books. Page one contains a picture dictionary, illustrating words featured in the story. All stories are fully illustrated.

Some story titles are "Josh's Bike," "I Can See the Moon," "Simple Machines," "Recycling," "The Hippopotamus," and "My Puppy Snickers."

Practice activities for every story include:
- a comprehension page
- a word family page

Other skills practiced include:
- sequencing events
- compound words
- possessives
- rhyming
- classification
- following directions

The stories and practice materials can be used for directed lessons with small groups or individual students or as independent practice activities in class or at home. The reading levels in each book span several grades to ensure that appropriate material for most all students is provided. A complete list of skills practiced is given in the table on contents for each book. An answer key is provided.

Many stories have a response page designed to encourage students to apply and connect story information and newly acquired reading skills to their own experiences. Charming, age-appropriate illustrations throughout. All 144 pages perforated for easy removal. $12.95 each.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Wrong Titles, October 22, 2008
By
R Stahl (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Read and Understand Fiction: Grades 4-6 (Paperback)
Read and Understand Fiction: Grades 4 -6 is a great book for teachers to use as an enrichment tool for third graders, and for fourth through sixth graders. I have used this book for years, and the students love the stories and follow-up activities. It has improved their comprehension skills, and increased their vocabularies. In addition, there are open-ended questions for the students to answer. Please be aware that some of the editorial info for this book is incorrect. The titles listed at amazon.com are the wrong titles!!! That being said, the book is well worth the price!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, August 5, 2009
This review is from: Read and Understand Fiction: Grades 4-6 (Paperback)
I am a teacher for adult ESL classes, and I've found this book to be quite useful for this level. In fact, 21 of the 22 total stories are quite good. The other story, "Kaleidoscope" is actually a poem, so it doesn't fit my students. Most of the stories have a moral lesson which can be learned by the reader, which I also like.

4.0 out of 5 stars good product, May 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Read and Understand Fiction: Grades 4-6 (Paperback)
It is what it says it is, although there seems to be a lot of the same types of genres over and over - more than is necessary. But the units are well-done and are exactly as they are described online. Used it with my 9 yr old daughter for homeschooling. She got tired of it, but we used to it my satisfaction.
