Read and Understand Science, Grades 1-2 presents stories that range from beginning first to beginning third in readability. The stories for grades 1-2 are comprised of four half pages. Students cut the pages and staple them together to create four-page minibooks. Topics presented include: * Life Science-leaves, baby/parent resemblance, growth needs of plants, animal tracks, the sea otter, tadpole to frog, the five senses, skeleton * Physical Science-sink and float, light, properties of materials, combining materials, states of matter, water vapor, water freezing, surface tension * Earth & Space Science-the sun, air, erosion, gravity, Earth's rotation, composting * Science & Technology-measuring temperature, machines, improving the function of a design

I got this for my almost 4 year old who loves science. It covers topics like the human body, plants, solids/liquids/gases, water, air, frogs, day and night, etc. Most sections have a few questions at the end. Many of the pictures in the book can be colored, which is a really nice feature. This is definitely a fun and informative book.
The text is short and basic; perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners. It is probably too basic for the average 1st grader and most 2nd graders. There is a book for 2nd and 3rd grade, which may be more appropriate for this age group.

My first grader is an independent reader, and I purchased this book thinking it would be a great way to develop her science vocabulary. The book is well-organized, but the vocabulary and activities are rather too basic for her reading and comprehension level. I think this book is more suited for the Pre-K and K level. There are cut and paste activities, short comprehension passages chopped up into several parts with questions at the end (the questions are mainly factual) and simple vocabulary and word families. If your child is an independent reader who already grasps basic science concepts, then you might want to try a more advanced book.

Wish they had set pages up differently for cut and pastes
While these books are reproducible, they have them set up in a way that you have to reproduce some pages because of the cut and pastes are on both sides of some pages. Read more
