5.0 out of 5 stars Unusually accurate cartoon-style Bible story book;, June 30, 1998
This review is from: Read-n-grow Picture Bible: Adventure from Creation to Revelation in 1,872 Realistic Pictures (Hardcover)
This is the only illustrated Bible story book that I have ever seen, that I can really recommend. Comparing the stories to a simple-English-language Bible reveals a careful attention to detail and significance in what is necessarily an abbreviated story. This alone is almost unique. The careful consideration of age- appropriate language is still unusual enough to be noteworthy. But the pictures!

I could count the anachronisms I have caught on the fingers of one hand. In most picture Bibles, this score is exceeded before the third page. But every detail seems to have been carefully researched: clothing, weapons, architecture, technology, are all taken from contemporary evidence. Most books just draw the people in robes. Not this one! Goliath wears armor and headdress right off Merenptah's pictures of the Sea Peoples. Israelite robes, Roman togas, Persian headgear, are all carefully distinguished. Even the geography is carefully represented. I highly recommend this book as the second resource (after an appropriate Bible translation such as NCB/ICB) for anyone teaching 4-10 year olds.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best picture Bible for all ages! But racial depictions are off., October 26, 2010

This review is from: Read-n-grow Picture Bible: Adventure from Creation to Revelation in 1,872 Realistic Pictures (Hardcover)
This Bible does a very thorough job of not only telling but portraying key Bible stories. If you are a visual learner this is excellent due to the comic book format. Yet the telling of each story remains rich. It is of course in chronological order and when needed the next story recaps the previous. For adults that aren't familiar with the flow of Bible history and the significance of how the Old Testament stories tie into the New Testament this picture Bible will get you up to speed on the basics. This is relatively minor but one thing that bothered me was the racial portrayal of characters as predominantly white. One of the few darker skinned characters in the picture Bible is a servant go figure. Even Bible scientists/historians have long understood that most of the people, if any were not Anglo Saxon. This Picture Bible is still worth having because the Word of God is far more important than any of our shades of color. I've bought a few of these to give away and we use it in our daycare and at church. Buy and be blessed!

5.0 out of 5 stars So excited to find this in good condition!, January 20, 2012

This review is from: Read-n-grow Picture Bible: Adventure from Creation to Revelation in 1,872 Realistic Pictures (Hardcover)
This book was in very good condition. Cover a little faded as was described. I was SO pleased to receive it and in such good condition. My family had this Bible when I was a child. I remembered it well and all the wonderful pictures. My father often read it to us before bedtime. It goes through the entire Bible in story form with lots of pictures. I bought it for my boyfriend's sons this Christmas. Now, he reads it with them before bedtime prayers. When I am there, we all read it together, taking turns. We will be marrying and adding to the number of children and are so happy to have this Bible for our family. It is very special to us.
