Is good for practicing skills, not learning them
on February 22, 2012
Our 5 1/2 year old is struggling with reading due to an Auditory Processing Disorder, so we were trying to create more fun opportunities to learn the reading skills in addition to the typical work we were already doing with her. We thought this game would be ideal for that and she was very excited to play it. Once we started though, we were all pretty disappointed. The graphics in the game are pretty bad, but that's not much different than some of the other kids Wii games we've purchased. What was frustrating for us as parents and particularly for our daughter was that this game wasn't built on actually teaching any of the reading skills at all. You have to already know all the things they're teaching; this is simply practice to solidify the skills. It's not made like the Reader Rabbit I remember using as a child.
We've only used the game three times and each time our daughter has ended up in tears because it's very frustrating for her. It may be fun for a kindergartener that is already able to read well, but not for a child that is struggling. We ended up just going to ReadingEggs.com and while it's not what we wanted initially, it has been incredibly beneficial.
