The school version of this early learning program consists of the Learn to Read CD-ROM, a second CD that prints out storybooks, a 128 page blackline workbook, flashcards and a Curriculum Integration Guide. The word "exciting" doesn't jump to mind when describing this program, but if you're looking for an easily understood, sequential set of reading activities for your beginning reader, this will do the trick. Kids who make it all the way through the program will come away with some solid early reading skills. They'll learn the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make, as well as many frequently used sight words like "the" and "on."
A guided section, Road to Reading, brings kids step-by-step through the process of learning each letter sound and each set of sight words. Children click on a letter to hear its name and sound, and then they must find four objects on the screen that start with the letter. Next, they see their newly learned letters in combinations and then in sight words. Finally, kids see their new letters and words in simple but entertaining interactive stories.
Children ages three and four will probably go to the activities through the Pick and Play mode. This lets kids select the activities and books from the guided section, in whatever order they wish. They can pick their own levels for many of the games in this section. Although we generally like giving children choices, this sometimes backfires when kids pick levels that are too difficult. Some guidance here may come in handy.
Several families had to push their kids into using the program since the activities were not always engaging. The games are essentially the same for each letter and the overall pace is slow. There also seems to be a delay in the action after each selection is made. Even with these weaknesses, the program's repetitive, sequential presentation of each letter, sound and word will help lay the foundation for reading. The teaching materials make a nice supplement to the software, making the program more appropriate and useful for schools.
