This review is from: A Reader's Guide to John Milton (Reader's Guide Series) (Paperback)
Nicolson does an excellent job of explaining some of Milton's most difficult works in easy and understandable terms. This guide would be especially helpful in an undergraduate class for those who have little or no knowledge of Milton. However, I used it in a graduate class and it was tremondously helpful in that class also. The chapters are I: "The Early Years" which covers his education and young life along with his masques: Arcades, Comus, and Lycidas. Chapter II starts with "The Making of a Stateman" and then covers his Sonnets. Chapter III is entiled "The Major Poems" which include Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes. Nicolson breaks Milton's works down and explains them in a clear manner, making the work easier to understand. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in knowing more about Milton and/or for the student of Milton in the classroom. Nicolson is an excellent place to begin! |
