Book Description

May 1, 2001
London has stimulated and fascinated writers from Chaucer, Dickens and De Quincey, to Orton, Orwell and more recently, Peter Ackroyd. Both a bedside companion and an imaginative travel guide, it leads you through the literary history of each district. Discover Boswell's Fleet Street, the Dickensian London of The Pickwick Papers and Little Dorrit and look at London Bridge through the eyes of T.S. Eliot. Packed with anecdotes about the lives of the city's writers, the book allows you to locate Dr. Johnson's favourite haunts and drink in the same bars as Dylan Thomas and Jeffrey Bernard. Accompanied by specially commissioned photographs of London today, and hundreds of illustrations of writers, manuscripts, prints and memorabilia, A Reader's Guide to Writers' London is a must for any lover of either literature or London.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

London has been a hub of English literary life from Chaucer to the present. The name Charles Dickens evokes visions of a drab, dreary London of the 19th century, while Virginia Woolf brings to mind the Bloomsbury area and its gathering of authors. A London resident and contributor to the "Time Out" guides to London, Cunningham divides up his book by district and then lists places of literary interest alphabetically under each. Each entry lists the author or authors associated with that address. Most of the places listed are private residences, and some streets have been renumbered since the authors lived there. Easy to follow and laden with information and anecdotes, this guide is beautifully illustrated with bright color photographs and illustrations both historical and contemporary. Ideal for literature-loving anglophiles, it is highly recommended for both academic and public libraries. Sandy Knowles, Henderson Cty. P.L., NC
