Book Description

Reader's Digest Explores
From the Biblical story of Jonah swallowed by the whale to today's whale-watching expeditions and porpoise demonstrations, humans and cetaceans have long shared a powerful and mysterious bond. Discover the secrets of whales, dolphins and porpoises in this exciting guide. This book brings together the latest research findings on the evolution, biology, habits and behaviour of these intriguing creatures. You'll learn why dolphins are not afraid of humans, how whales learn from one another, the basics of whale locomotion - the refined navigational system of Beluga whales, and the remarkable social life of dolphins. The book also looks at the role these creatures have played in art, myth and legend - from Australian aboriginal rock carvings of whales to a strikingly vivid Minoan fresco of dolphins in the Palace of Knossos in Crete. The book includes stunning colour photographs from some of the world's most acclaimed nature photographers and an illustrated directory of 48 species. Enhance your understanding and knowledge of these remarkable creatures with this fascinating guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK book, December 27, 2000
This review is from: Reader's digest explores whales, dolphins & porpoises (Hardcover)
I found this book to be very similar to the book "Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises" by the Nature Company Guide. My assumption was that it was an earlier print of the same book which has since been updated. My mistake! Anyway, it features most of the stuff found in the earlier mentioned book, minus the part where whale watching spots around the world are discussed. Overall an OK book.
