5.0 out of 5 stars This is MORE than just a book: Audios and Video included!
This wonderful program is geared for students eight years and up. And for the older students, it is advised that they too, start from the beginning of the book even though it appears more elementary. This is clearly an excellent program to teach before children enter school or, similarly, for the older students or people who have been illiterate.

2.0 out of 5 stars Complicating a simple subject
Although there is a plethora of information available through this tool and many interesting techniques, I found the workbook to be very complicated. Not to say that the information was difficult to comprehend, yet the action reading program somehow made the entire process of learning phonics more complicated than it should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is MORE than just a book: Audios and Video included!, January 8, 2003
This review is from: Action Reading FUNdamentals Home Phonics Tutorial Program (Audio Cassette)
This wonderful program is geared for students eight years and up. And for the older students, it is advised that they too, start from the beginning of the book even though it appears more elementary. This is clearly an excellent program to teach before children enter school or, similarly, for the older students or people who have been illiterate.

Developed by Jeanie Eller, she discovered ACTION READING, George O. Cureton's classic phonics teaching method. This program incorporates all the learning senses taught by visual aids and phonics. Eller is also recognized as one of the nation's leading literacy consultants, advocates and teacher. According to the booklet, in 1994, Jeanie taught a group of illiterate adults to read in two weeks for the "Oprah Winfrey Show."

You will get a clear understanding by watching the video. The object of this method is to teach SOUNDS. She uses a pictures to represent the sounds of letters. Helpful info is provided for working with children in making it fun and enjoyable.

Here, FAST TRACK is designed for a faster pace of ACTION READING. Included in this program is A 100-page picture and phonics booklet, SIX audio cassettes and ONE videotape aid the learning process that also includes flashcards that represent the sounds used. All are packaged in an attractive clamshell.

This is excellent for educators. ....MzRizz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded expectations even with recommendations!, August 20, 2008

I am thoroughly impressed with this program! The instructional DVD was both educational and interesting, giving reasons for the system and some of the history behind the english alphabet. One of the most interesting things to me was the history behind certain words that don't seem to follow the normal rules of either spelling or pronunciation. Well, language changes over time. Some of those words used to be pronounced differently or spelled with longer versions and have simply retained the original phonetic spellings or been shortened slightly. I found the history intriguing. I also love the fact that this system is based on the english language being 97% phonetic. I had looked at the weekly lists of sight words for a friend's elementary school child and shuddered when I thought of all that rote memorization. Instead, this program has a total of 70 phonograms that will allow the student to read AND SPELL 97% of the words in the English language. I have always had an easy time reading and spelling and even I learned a few tricks just watching the DVD!

This program delivers the solid foundation for reading and spelling that is essential for future learning. I originally looked into the program on the glowing recommendation of my daughter's preschool teacher. She uses it to tutor reading and now I heartily endorse it myself. I will be starting to use it with my 4 year old daughter this school season as a supplement. She is already very excited about it. The program exploits the benefits of multi-sensory learning with songs, games, physical movements and many more suggestions. We have already used the shaving cream finger painting technique to practice letters and draw pictures. One thing I did do with the first alphabet/picture card sheet was to copy and laminate the individual cards so they would last longer and I would have a spare.

The package I received was a very nice boxed set with a 102 page workbook, gameboards and flashcard sheets, instructional DVD and 8 audio CDs, including a music CD with all the songs together. It also has a pair of dice and chips for games. I assume that this is the standard package they are now selling, replacing the previous VHS and audio cassette version. I understand you can order extra workbooks and card sets from their website. Oh yes, the program also boasts a 100% money back guarantee.

I highly recommend this "Complete Language Arts Program" that teaches "phonics, comprehension, writing, spelling, vocabulary, handwriting, content analysis and listening skills presented in a systematic, logical, intensive phonics environment that enables the student to read real literature." It is well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overcame dyslexia problem, July 4, 2009
This review is from: Action Reading FUNdamentals Home Phonics Tutorial Program (Audio Cassette)
This is the most clear and progressive way to teach a child to read and pronounce the English language that I have found. My daughter could not read in first grade and was very confused about the whole reading concept. We discovered she was dyslexic (she even mixed sounds verbally too e.g. tathbub, fornclakes, flotter swy - fly swatter) By second grade she hated books and anything remotely connected with reading and my husband and I were at our wits end trying to find a solution. My daughter is very musical and could memorize any song (or movie) so quickly for her age but couldn't begin to understand the written language. Then we discovered Jeannie Eller's Fast Track reading so we took her out of school and I began homeschooling. She donned her headphones and clipped her walkman to her belt and learned to read walking round the house and singing her heart out. She can still say the alphabet phonetically at top speed which was one of the confidence boosts she enjoyed most in the beginning. I attribute her ability to cypher words and read well to this program. By the way my daughter is now a junior in college and holds a 4.0 GPA. I know that Jeanie Eller taught this program in Alaska with great success, I just wish we would use her program in the rest of the states.

This product was a very smart purchase; one that I am planning to use more than once. It is a very valuable way to teach others to read and shows the value of the skill of reading.

The phonics kit is great for preschoolers and children under 6. The activities are designed for children that are learning how to read as well as write. Overall I would use this with children ages 3 to 5. It is a great method for teaching the alphabet, sounds and word development.

2.0 out of 5 stars information is there but the presentation, is boring, July 27, 2010

Ms. Jeanie Eller is a pioneer in phonics education, and her information is right on. But personally from a teaching point of view, this approach is not very interesting to the student and needs to be more interactive in its approach.
