From the Inside Flap

Reading the Horse's Mind This is a book for horse owners and riders of all abilities and competitive interests who want to achieve the best from their horses through an understanding of how the equine mind works. Lifelong horsewoman Jackie Budd shows us how to see life through the horse's eyes and how to use his natural instincts to advantage rather than as sources of conflict. For those who ride primarily for pleasure she gives invaluable advice on how to handle and care for a horse and how to ride with sensitivity in order to foster a rewarding relationship built on mutual trust. She pays special attention to the training of the young horse, which is fundamental to success in any sport. Budd supplements her own extensive knowledge of the horse with remarkable insights garnered from interviews with some of the most famous people on the international circuit today. The riders, trainers, and instructors in the book include:
  • Linda Tellington-Jones
  • Monty Roberts
  • Susan Hutchison
  • Kathleen Raine
  • Karen O'Connor

4.0 out of 5 stars Natural Horsemanship, March 17, 2001
By
Caroline Phillips (North Wales, United Kingdom.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Reading the Horse's Mind (Hardcover)
This book is ideal for those wanting to know more about 'natural horsemanship'.It covers ideas and inserts from all the leading specialists in this field: Monty Roberts, Linda Tellington Jones, and also leading sportspeople: Mary King, Carl Hester, Karen O'Connor, David Broome, Susan Hutchinson, Sylvia Logh and Marcy Parvord.THe only reason it hasnt got 5 Stars is that I would have liked a little more about how to overcome specific problems rather than the general allround insight it gives you.

However I now know that I am interested enough to go and buy an other book that will cover different training problems in depth. This book has given me the grounding in horse behaviour and his mind. I think it is an interesting read and one to have on the shelf in the home rather than leaving it at the shop. The main topics it covers are: Evolution of the horse, The horses world, Patterns for living, How do horses Learn, How intelligent are horses, The mind in training, Setting up for success.
