5.0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful May 24, 2013

This is marvelous. It has everything I've been looking for but failing to find in a reading app for my nearly 4 y.o. daughter. There are hundreds of books in all manner of styles about a wide variety of subjects, from whimsical fun to exploratory science. The app's interface is fun and easy for my daughter to navigate, and with a subscription-based pay schedule, I don't have to worry about her accidentally buying something. A brief overview:

-Your child will have a "backpack" (he or she can choose one of several designs, and have fun switching it around) to which they can download five books. These books will be stored on your device, so it won't need to be connected to the internet for your child to access these books. When they wish to get a new book, they can drag one of their book icons into the "return" slot in their backpack, which will delete the book. Then when connected to wifi, they can go find another one to checkout.

-They find books on one of several "islands." These islands are thematically organized, and full of books. Each book has an icon of the cover, and your child can drag what they choose into their backpack to "checkout." We've read dozens of books so far, and they are all very high quality, and carefully chosen. When you can't be there to read to your child, the readers are all excellent. LeVar Burton reads several. Books that are especially appropriate for your child's age and interests are marked. National Geographic Kids has their own island.

-There are many little extras in the app. The best of which are the video clips. Each island has many video clips to watch, informative and delivered with Mr. Burton's charismatic gentle intelligence. I think they're taken from the television show.

5.0 out of 5 stars The benefit of Reading Rainbow AND a reader... April 10, 2013
By Lisa M

My daughter got a Kindle Fire for her birthday and I found that RR had an app for it. It is awesome. My daughter LOVES it, as we have always loved reading and Reading Rainbow.

To have such quality children's literature literally at our fingertips, where she can read whatever she wants, whenever she wants, for a very low cost.

I read someone's negative review on the iTunes App Store, that they expected free books. I am an author myself, and it is horrendous to think that someone would expect an author to just arbitrarily give their work away. That is their work! They deserve to be paid for it!

The app is wonderful. The selection of reading material is wonderful. My daughter will be turning 10 but I doubt seriously she'll be outgrowing this anytime soon. Thank you for this, Levar Burton! So good to see you back!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent program March 22, 2013

I really really like this App, it feels much nicer to hand my kindle over to my daughter (3) and have her have a narrator read her the same story over and over, than to let her watch something terrible on netflix streaming (she can find my little ponies in under 3 seconds). Much like watching old Mr. Rogers, visiting with Lavar again has been an unexpected treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good app for my kids. April 15, 2013

My kids love this app because it reads to them and has little moving graphics on the pages of the book. I like it because it's educational and not TV. I do wish the selection of books was wider though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better after latest update! May 29, 2013

UPDATE: They fixed the bugs and this app now works perfectly. We are very pleased with it and it's definitely worth the $19.99 subscription. Don't be put off by the seemingly high price, it works out to $3.33 a month for a ton of books! We have a pretty pitiful local library, so this app is wonderful for us.

Now they just need to make it so multiple kids can use it and have their own settings.

**********************************************************
This app is extremely glitchy for the price. I paid for the $19.99 subscription and I'm already regretting it. My 5yo is getting very frustrated that the app is constantly freezing up and taking forever to load things. It seems like you can't do ANYTHING without getting the 'non-responsive force close' pop-up. VERY frustrating and annoying for an adult, now imagine how the child feels! When she finally gets her book to load she enjoys it very much, so with work this could be a 5-star app and well worth the subscription fees. Until then, it's a 2-star app.

3.0 out of 5 stars the jury is still out May 14, 2013

I am still trying to figure out how to work the subscription so that each of my children can have their own backpackers and their own book wish lists.
I like how the app is set up I just wish there was multiple users settings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Seriously disappointed May 23, 2013

After subscribing ($7.99/month or $19.99/6 months), only 2 islands' books load, sometimes the book icons are blank. This app is Very Buggy. This had better be fixed soon, or I will be looking for a refund.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unable to subscribe (Updated) May 31, 2013
Verified Purchase
I grew up with and still to this day love Reading Rainbow but this app is seriously flawed. I've been trying since Sunday to subscribe to the content and I keep getting a processing error.

I contacted Amazon customer service on Sunday morning after spending the app and followed the troubleshooting process provided.

I went under settings and cleared the data for both the Appstore and Reading Rainbow app and then synced my account. This process didn't work and the rep advised me they would check with the developer on this issue. I also have sent a request to the publisher and the response which came in my email on Thursday May 30th from both Amazon and the publisher were to follow the steps listed above.

I have since reset to factory conditions & 're-registered my kindle fire HD in the hopes of the app working and accepting my subscription request to no avail.

Until this can be fixed, I will have to keep this review at 1 star. I would gladly give this a 5 star rating if I could subscribe for my 5 year old son.

*****Update 6/3/2013*****

After being contacted by Reading Rainbow customer service and a follow up email from Amazon, I was able to finally subscribe to the app. The content is great and my review is being updated to 5 stars.
