Absolutely necessary for anyone who teches reading and phonics to children of any age. This book will give a list of words that contain any phonic combination in the English Language. I highly suggest every teacher own this book. Give them as gifts to new teachers joining your school. Nothing will be appreciated more by any teacher.

I liked it so much I took it to school and shared it with my fellow elementary ed students and instructor, and they ALL bought the book too! This is a must-have for any elementary teacher. 5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite Books, November 24, 2005

I write educational materials. Before I found this book, I spent hours making lists of words to suit different requirements, Now I can spend that time in more creative ways. This volume doesn't contain ready-to-use activities, but it is jam-packed with the raw materials necessary to create them. For example, you can plug the lists into crossword, word search, or multiple choice question-generating software to generate an endless variety of effective teaching exercises.

This is a quite helpful book. I don't think it's really that indispensable... i mean, it isn't packed with activity ideas, like i thought it would be. But it does have lots of great information in it for reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, August 28, 2005
As a first year middle school teacher, this book has been an essential addition to my teacher resource library. I have used many of the material to create games and mind benders for my students.

4.0 out of 5 stars List Mania!, September 19, 2005

This book is wonderful! It was required for a class, but I am so happy about that! There are lists for everything, all at your fingertips! I use the book now at least once a day, if not more. If you're thinking about how you would use this book, don't think about it...just buy it! I also recommend buying it with 'The Writing Teacher's Book of Lists' you save money from amazon that way (free shipping) and both are extremely useful!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Most Valuable Resource, April 14, 2010

I highly recommend this book to any teacher. I am an LD teacher and I have used this book while working with students at all levels (kindergarten to medical school students). I first bought a copy in 1993,that edition wore out and I have bought at least two more. I occasionally teach a graduate level class at Marshall University, when I do I always recommend my students purchase this book. My students rave about it. I use this book all the time for teaching reading, writing, and spelling. It is an invaluable resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teacher Essential, October 2, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This text is invaluable. As a Title 1 teacher, I use it frequently to target those specific deficit skills. No longer must I depend upon memory or a workbook to provide key words for targeted practice. As a classroom teacher, this text provides fabulous lists of words based upon skill-specific information. It aides the targeting of deficit areas, and is intuitive in its use. This text is a must have. I would spend much more time "inventing"(read here- trying to remember words that have the ____ sound) instead of simply listing words for target areas for intensive intervention. It is also a terrific gift for beginning teachers! Worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teachers' "Book of Lists" Invaluable, November 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This large, soft-back book is one of the most valuable items any teacher of Reading or ESL can have! It contains opposites, irregular verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, sounds of letter combinations, idioms, sentence builders, and anything else you might need. I had used it for many years teaching primary children and non-English-speaking adults. When I retired I passed my book on to a teacher friend. Later I volunteered to tutor ESL students and found that I needed my book again. Thanks to Amazon, I'm back in the classroom with my trusty "Reading Teacher's Book of Lists" by Edward Fry!
