1.0 out of 5 stars Be careful, Amazon has the ISBN wrong
There are TWO ISBN/ISBN13s for this book. One comes with free access to myeducationlab.com, Pearson's supplemental website that my university requires access to. Access is $30, and the books are the same price. No-brainer, right? Not with Amazon, no.

(REAL NAME)
Peregoy and Boyle have written an outstanding resource book for elementary and secondary school teachers who work with English Language Learners (ELLs). This book focuses on the literacy development for ELL students which is so critical to their success in education and in life. The book includes relevant research information pertaining to second language aquisition, literacy development, and cultural issues. Theory is transformed into practice with solid guidance for teachers working with ELLs in process writing, literature study, and content area studies. Background information, scaffolding techniques, in-depth teacheing strategies, and activity examples are seamlessly merged into a tremendously helpful resource guide which enables teachers to truly employ "best practices" in classrooms with ELLs. I first used this book while obtaining a Master's degree in education, and as a classroom teacher, have found it to be an invaluable resource. It is well worth the (relatively small) monetary and time investment for any teacher who cares about offering ELL students the bast instruction possible.

I am currently studying to be a teacher and taking a course in teaching ESOL. Our class uses this book and believe or not, it's actually one of this textbooks you can't put down! The authors keep the audience interested by giving examples of real-life scenarios. I highly recommend this book to get a better view of how to make ESL students adapt to a new environment. Very beneficial!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and practical, May 14, 2006
I use this as the text for a university level ESL Methods course. I've especially liked the authors use of specific classroom examples, as well as suggestions for learning activities that students can utilize. It is also full of suggestions for effective teaching strategies to use with ELLs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for ESL, October 11, 2005
A valuable resource for all teachers, especially those of English Language Learners. The book describes a variety of methods to support all students in the classroom. The authors have thoroughly researched their theories and rationales in order to provide teachers and educators with practices that truly foster the success of all learners. Each chapter has discussion questions and references for further readings about each topic presented.

1.0 out of 5 stars Be careful, Amazon has the ISBN wrong, November 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Reading, Writing and Learning in ESL: A Resource Book for Teaching K-12 English Learners (with MyEducationLab) (5th Edition) (Paperback)
There are TWO ISBN/ISBN13s for this book. One comes with free access to myeducationlab.com, Pearson's supplemental website that my university requires access to. Access is $30, and the books are the same price. No-brainer, right? Not with Amazon, no.

ISBN 10: 0-205-62684/ISBN 13: 978-0-205-62684-7 is what is listed for this particular book and is what is listed under my purchases. This is the version that comes with free access to their website. My new book came shrinkwrapped with the correct ISBN/ISBN13.

However, the actual BOOK has the ISBN/ISBN 13 of the version that does NOT come with the access. That version is ISBN 10: 0-205-59324-0/ISBN 13: 978-0-205-59324-8. Therefore, I had to pay an extra $30 to access the required website because of Amazon's oversight.

Of course, there is no way to simply notify Amazon of this problem without an exchange with a processing time of 3-5 days--AND there's no guarantee that it is a problem that would be rectified with a replacement.

Thanks a lot, Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad, and the ugly, February 20, 2006
This book has lots of good ideas in it for all classrooms. I loved Chapter 4 and found new ideas that I'm excited to try out. The bad and the ugly are found in the wordy way in which the book is written and in the overuse of real world situations for what seems each and every "teaching tool." You can easily and quickly scan those sections, however, and they are good for those readers who need them to help them comprehend what the teaching tool would look like in a real classroom. I just found them to get in the way of the "meat and potatoes" of the book.

While there is more information in the latest edition, this is a great resource tool. I was able to use this edition for my graduate course instead of the newest one and had NO problems! Save yourself some money and continue using in the classroom!
