I know there are a few of you out there who observe the Daily Office, either Morning or Evening Prayer (or both). Perhaps your own preaching skills aren't that great, and besides, it's kind of hard to deal with a preacher when you are reading the Daily Office on your own. Or perhaps you observe both Morning and Evening Prayer and you are looking for something to serve as a fourth reading. Well, look no longer. This book is great. It is full of writings of the "Early Church Fathers" (though they are not all male -- including Egeria, a 4th century Abbess; Teresa of Avila; Julian of Norwich). The writings are all according to the day of the church year and match the Daily Office. I have used this book for over three years in the Daily Office in the place where a sermon might usually go. It could also be used as a fourth reading, if one wanted to read two passages in the morning and two in the evening. There are many works by Augustine of Hippo, Gregory the Great, Clement of Rome, and others of Early Church fame. Robert Wright has done a fantastic job of compilation, and demonstrates a true sense of what would appeal to those of us who observe the Daily Office. This is a "one-of-a-kind" book. I've found nothing to even compare with it until recently, when Wright compiled another book to do the same thing for the Lesser Feasts and Fasts.

Great for daily devotion and to keep in touch with, or get to know better, the Church Fathers and Mothers - Basil, Origen, Tertullian, Irenaeus, Polycarp, Julian, Egeria, Bede... Not bad for sermon help in a pinch either. Compiled by Rev. J. Robert Wright, priest, ecclesiastical diplomat and esteemed seminary professor and scholar of church history at the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in New York. Wright shares his lifelong love for his faith, his church and their respective histories through the carefully chosen selections in this compilation.

I utilize the readings with doing Daily Office. To read on a daily basis the writings of the Early Church Fathers is very enjoyable and thought provoking. Good supplement.
