4.0 out of 5 stars Sailings Biggest Advocate., March 5, 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Ready About! (Hardcover)
Even though this book was published in 1986, lots of what the author has to say still rings true.

If your interested in why the sailing industry is stagnant with no technological advances and what to do to cure this problem then you won't be able to put down this book until you are done reading what the author Gary Hoyt has to say.

You will learn about the problem with racing's governing bodies, and how their restrictions impede advancement in design and the ability to attract new members, both male and female to the sport of sailing. The author then gives you his theories on how this can all be corrected.

The author also discusses the involvement or lack of involvement with the government.

Gary Hoyt also shows you his concepts of faster boats, better sails, and designs for racing classes that are fair to all.

I would have given this book another star but some of it is a bit dated. I do hope the author puts out a new book soon, because I know from his web-site that he is still actively involved in pushing sail boat technology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most important sailing book of the 20th Century, December 22, 2003

This review is from: Ready About! (Hardcover)
Garry Hoyt's thin tract serves the same place in the sailing world that Einstein's original article on Relativity served in the scientific world: all previous assumptions and paradigms are shattered, and a new reality will eventually be built upon its foundations. Unfortunately for Hoyt revolutionary theories of sailing don't impose the same urgency on society as theories of physics, so you may not see many of his ideas come into play even by the end of this new century. If you want to read why someone believes hull speed can be increased to 40mph for monohulls with little effort, or have a hankering to achieve that yourself, you will need to obtain a copy of this book and make it your bible.
